Doug Fiely and Steve Smith at Orchard in June

Paintings & Printmaking by Doug Fiely
What: Douglas R. Fiely is a diversified artist. Though educated as a printmaker and holding an MFA in the medium, he is also an avid painter. “Recently, I’ve witnessed a personal renaissance in painting – a medium in which I struggled as a student. It’s now become as natural as breathing."
Operating a home studio and gallery in northwestern Ohio, Fiely remains prolific in a variety of art mediums. His style is spontaneous. He likes relying on chance accidents which open up new doors in the working process
Fiely will also have collaborative pieces with potter, Steve Smith. "Currently, Smith and I collaborate; he throws the piece and I carve into it."
Stoneware Pottery & Sculpture by Steve Smith
What: Showing for the first time at Orchard Gallery, Steve Smith, brings classic shapes with his own style. Collaborating with several artists on surfaces gives those works a whole new look. Steve says, "I generally work alone but in the past few years I have been collaborating more on surface decoration with Doug Fiely and Poet ,Jen Schalliol. My personal work is more about process , my collaborations are more about being lyrical, and story telling."

Upcoming Classes offered by Artlink
"Lost Foam Aluminum Casting for Beginner's" with Mary Klopfer
June 20-24, 2011
Create a sculpture in Styrofoam and pack it in sand. Aluminum is melted and poured into the sand. When it's cool, sculpture is pulled out of the sand and, just like magic you have an aluminum version of what you sculpted in foam. We'll be working in the SOCA foundry and will create cast metal sculptures much the way it has been done for thousands of years, but with twentieth century technology! Students can cast 1-2 pieces. Size limit for sculpture is 9" H x 3" W x 4 ½" D. Class limited to 12 students.
Cost: Fee of $250 for Artlink members, $275 for non-members; Students responsible for the following Supply List: Leather work gloves, safety glasses, disposable respirators, high-top work boots, or hiking boots. Students will be charged for aluminum by the pound. Approximate cost of aluminum per student would be $28.00 for 20 lbs.
"Mixed Media Relief Print Workshop" with Art Cislo
June 27 through July 1, 2011
Students will be using/learning woodcut techniques in combination with other drawing media. The hand-rubbed print will be emphasized over the use of the press. Other medium incorporated in the woodcut print will be watercolor, pastel as well as monotype. This approach will result in one-of-a-kind prints rather than an edition. The techniques will be relatively simple, drawing oriented and the process is always open to new input and explorations (e.g. putting down watercolor first, then cutting a block and printing over it). These are techniques teachers can use in their classrooms as can artists in their studio. Class limited to 12 students.
Cost: Fee of $250 for Artlink members, $275 for non-members; Students responsible for the following Supply List: Student's preference in drawing media, any combination of charcoal, graphite, watercolor, brush, pen and ink, Conte, oils, etc. A few rags e.g. corduroy cloth. A few good sheets of paper like Stonehenge or Arches Text, or some Hot Press Watercolor paper for final prints. Gouges: if possible bring a small v-gouge, a half-round gouge, and a sharp knife (X-ACTO).
Workshops are held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Rolland Art Center, University of Saint Francis, 1111 Leesburg Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46808. No refunds unless space can be filled from waiting list.Three credit hours are available through the University of Saint Francis for Indiana Dept of Education Professional Development and Graduate Credit. Tuition of $1050 per workshop to be paid to USF on the first day of the workshop. Artlink will send you USF registration form or download form from our website, www.artlinkfw.com; do not call USF.

Call for mural artists--Deadline Monday!
Call for artists--Mural at new Parkview Hospital Dupont
You have a unique opportunity to participate in an art project that is being funded by Parkview Hospital. It is a 20' x 8' mural unlike anything in the United States. It will be featured in a prominent place in their new hospital off Dupont Rd. The mural is divided into 160 12"x12" canvases. The concept is to hand a portion of these canvases out, that have already received the first wash, to 40 local artists. They will then be asked to paint a depiction of a Northeast Indiana philanthropist, an everyday Star, one who visits the sick, delivers food to the homeless or builds tall community buildings while keeping the lines and tones of the original canvas. When all the canvases are put together they will create a northeast Indiana countryside scene and on closer inspection the individual canvases will show your idea of philanthropy.
Please visit this link to see the overall canvas at murosity.com. The artists selected will receive $300 for each 12"x12" canvas if it follows the guidelines. In addition, if you are selected, you will be featured through a video presentation at the hospital, through a documentary that is being developed about the process of making this mural, and of course included in the celebration of the unveiling.
Guidelines and more information will be made available after the jury process to the selected artist.
Please submit 4 jpegs of your work to brink.santa@yahoo.com no later than May 16, 2011.
Notification of selection of artists by June 1, 2011.
Completion of canvas by Sept 1, 2011.
Further Information will be provided after jury.

The Art Farm: Lisa Vetter & Paul Siefert
17612 N County Line Rd E
Spencerville IN 46788
Lisa & Paul have spent much of the last 7 years restoring their 1860 farmhouse and their studio outbuilding. Their philosophy that life is art translates in the functional found object assemblage pieces & jewelry they create for both love and money.
A stop at Liechty Buffalo Ranch, right next to Kristy Jo's studio will offer buffalo viewing, as well as buffalo meat for sale. Take a break at Covered Bridge Pancake House...an excellent (and reasonably priced) place to stop for a meal while on the tour. "Beside Still Waters Greenhouse" is new to the tour this year. A beautiful place to visit and pick up some plants for Spring. These local businesses are all on the map and we thank them for their sponsorship of the tour.....which has enabled us to offer it to the public for free.
*Artlink Offers Tour Bus for Rural Studio Tour 2011:
If you'd rather relax and not worry about directions...let Artlink do the driving! Artlink is renting several passenger vans, which will visit each artist studio. Cost is $32 for Artlink members/$35 for non-members. Price includes a Subway Box Lunch. Call Artlink for more info: 26o-424-7195. Seating is limited!
The vans will be in Meijer’s parking lot on Lima Road on Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. The tour includes three stops in north Fort Wayne and then it’s off to Leo for four more artists’ studios. The last stop is in Spencerville at The Art Farm. The vans will arrive back at Meijer’s around 4:00 p.m. To download a registration form, go to www.artlinkfw.com. A check made out to Artlink saves a seat on the van.
