American Stories Lecture - Pop & Op: The Deification of Popular Culture
Thursday, March 15, 2012
1:00 - 2:00pm
Free
With world wars behind us, Ab Ex opponents were now looking for something-anything-that would turn the leading mode of expression to a more humanistic form rooted in tradition. Yet, artists could not fully return to the traditions of the past without noticing the visual culture of the day: mass printing was booming and screen media was evolving, two indicators that what was popular, mass produced, and easily consumed visually would have a foremost presence in the American way of life. Enter Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Claes Oldenburg as key figures in the 1960s decade of Pop & Optical Art.

The Dormant Apothecary at Lotus Gallery

Christine Calhoun & Augusta Pryor: The Dormant Apothecary
Opening: Saturday, March 3rd from 6:00-9:00pm
March 3-24, 2012
This exhibition will feature a variety of drawing and painting mediums. A mix of activist art and the surreal.
Christine Calhoun works in brightly colored oil pastels, colored pencils and paints: mixing in dark and gloomy colors to create an often unexpected and fascinating wonderland. The sky in her subjects worlds is never flat, it is multifaceted like a gem stone, with almost as many colors. Augusta Pryor at first glance leans towards the dark, but it is really truth and introspection. Her work forces you to reexamine yourself. The glass in front of her harsh introspective stare seems to magnify the power like a microscope.
Both are recent graduates from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In the Garden in March at Orchard Gallery

In the Garden...Themed Invitational featuring Over 30 Artists
March 3-31, 2012
Reception: Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 12-5pm
Orchard Gallery
Way more than an exhibition about just flowers, In the Garden features artistic interpretations of what you might expect to find in a garden. All the creatures who inhabit your garden (that you may or may not find adorable): birds, bugs, turtles, toads, rabbits & butterflies. Pieces of art that you may use to beautify your outdoor space: planters, bird houses, wind chimes, garden ornaments & more. And YES...there will be plenty of lush flowers too! Expect to find both realistic and stylized paintings & photography, colorful & whimsical clay tiles, glass & metal sculptures, and wind chimes made from clay, metal & glass. Wooden boxes and gourds...transformed with garden inspired drawings and stamped designs. Some fabulous work will be coming from our local jewelry artists, as well...art that can be worn! Our member and guest artists have stayed busy during these Winter months creating special pieces for this exhibition. Works by over 30 artists will be displayed and are available for purchase all month long. In the Garden will be kicked off with a Garden Party style Artists' reception on Saturday, March 3rd from 12-5pm. The public is invited to join us as we usher in Spring, a little early this year. As an added bonus, Mo Palmer, of Cultured Gardens, will provide her artistic "landscaping" just outside the gallery . There is no charge to attend the reception or visit The Orchard Gallery.

The artist with the most votes in each category will win the coveted AVA Award designed by Fort Wayne ceramist George Morrison and a $100 Gift Card from United Art and Education. Winners will be announced at the party. If unable to attend the AVA Party, the public may purchase a ballot in advance of the party for $5 and vote for their favorite artists by sending their ballot back to Artlink to be counted before the party!
Artlink encourages everyone to purchase AVA Party tickets in advance at a cost of only $10. Tickets purchased at the door will be $15. Remember, each ticket comes with a ballot which must be filled in and returned to Artlink before the event. In the case of $15 tickets, ballots will be counted that evening. Tickets and ballots may be purchased at Artlink, Auer Center for Arts and Culture, 300 E. Main St., or by calling 424-7195. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit Artlink’s exhibition programming. So join Artlink for what promises to be another wonderful AVA celebration!

DID's Artist Survey for Northeast Indiana and Fort Wayne
In an attempt to collect a stronger artist directory for use in the distribution of information to artists (grants, workshops, etc), and the production of Last
Saturdays events, we have created this artist survey.
This is a short, seven question survey, designed to collect contact information, descriptions of the artist's work, and get a better idea of what assets artists need to increase their production.
Please spread the word about this survey by sending it to your friends, co-workers, and organizations that might be interested in sharing it with artists with which they work. Also, please fill out the survey if you are an artist!
We are looking for visual artists, musicians, fashion designers, writers, curators, composers, film-makers, graphic designers, architects, educators who produce work, students, and anyone else who creates objects and experiences in Northeast Indiana. We want to create as comprehensive a list as possible, and account for the diversity within our creative community, which many times gets overlooked.
Again, please tell others about this artist survey and fill it out if you are a local artist.
Take care,
Dan Swartz

Exhibits opening at FWMoA
Trench Art: Productive Pastimes from the Debris of War
January 14 - February 26, 2012
Trench Art is commonly and broadly defined as any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. Common articles that this includes are decorated, or modified shell or bullet casings, mess kits, helmets, and similar items at hand to a soldier at war. This type of art was a frequent souvenir of soldiers of the first half of the 20th century, and is often still found in the homes of veterans or their descendants.
The exhibitions is a collaboration with the Museum of the Soldier, Portland, Indiana and guest curated by FWMoA Technical Director Brian K. Williamson. Williamson is a founding board member and Vice President of the Museum of the Soldier as well as a Master Sergeant in the Indiana National Guard scheduled for a tour in Afghanistan in early 2012.
Active Military Personnel and Veterans will be admitted free with valid ID.
Cabinet of Curiosities: Works from the Collection
January 21 - February 26, 2012
Wunderkammer, or "Cabinets of Curiosities," arose in mid 16th century Europe as repositories for all manner of wondrous and exotic objects. In many ways, these are seen as precursors to the modern museum. Cabinet of Curiosities will bring together disparate works from the FWMoA's Collections highlighting and juxtaposing their differences in time period, media, function and the object's relationship to the definition of art. Challenge yourself to explore the links between 19th century tableware, a Japanese Urn, contemporary ceramics and mid 20th century studio glass; the results may surprise you! Included artists will range from nationally recognized makers to those with local Fort Wayne connections. Several of the works have not been displayed previously at FWMoA, and additional works have not been on display in recent years-find out what 'curious' objects the Museum owns!
