Summer Set: Home Made

This is the second in a suite of shows hosted at Club Soda (235 E. Superior) by Wunderkammer Company which runs from July 9th to August 3rd.

"Home Made" is an example of the high craftsmanship and extended conceptual practice of a group of 6 Fort Wayne artists including Daniel Dienelt, Michelle Diller, Marie Gardeski, David Birkey, John McCormick, and Josh Hoering.

Their works are both intricate and virtuoso in their construction and execution. While their styles and media differ, all of these artists are creating rich works out of base materials and finding new voices to speak with in vocabulary which is steeped in both Midwest, and global contemporary experiences.

Peter Turnley’s The Content of Our Character Exhibit Debuts at the University of Saint Francis

The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis is pleased to host the premier exhibition of an original photo essay, The Content of Our Character, by award-winning photographer Peter Turnley, from July 11 through August 19. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Weatherhead Gallery of the Rolland Art Center off Leesburg Road.

After photographing Barack Obama campaigning in Ohio and documenting the reactions to the campaign by his neighbors in Harlem, photojournalist Peter Turnley boarded a bus in Brooklyn with a group of approximately 40 citizens from New York to witness the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

“I have been a photojournalist for the past 25 years and have had the incredible opportunity to witness many of the world’s defining moments of modern history: the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of Communism in Eastern Europe in 1989, the end of apartheid in South Africa and Nelson Mandela walking out of prison in 1991, and most of the world’s conflicts of the past three decades. When our bus pulled into Maryland on the eve of the inauguration, I knew after hearing the words of my fellow passengers—in some sense fellow pilgrims—that I was witnessing a moment of history like maybe no other in terms of its magnitude, certainly not in America.” ~ Peter Turnley http://www.peterturnley.com

This exhibition is an affiliated event with the 2009 Three Rivers Festival. The exhibition will run through August 19, 2009. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Once a dancer, Kathy now works with glass. "The joy I once found movement, I now find in color, light and line. Being an artist is a way of looking at the world and making pieces of that vision apparent to others. Glass is a beautiful medium for exploring light and color. I am still known for having elegant lines, along with a strong sense of color and joy. I am still excited to open the kilns and see my latest glass piece or lampwork beads. I am happy to be able to share them with others."

Deadline June 10 for Motherlode Exhibit Entries

Motherlode Group has once again been invited to exhibit at the Allen County Public Library’s Jeffery Krull Art Gallery. For this event we wish to connect established adult female artists with young female artists ages 12-18. As the title of the exhibition Big Ideas in Small Packages suggests, the theme of the work will be very broad, however, the size of the work will be limited to 8”x8” (unframed). The final framed piece can be no larger than 15”x15”.

The Motherlode Group was developed to illustrate the strength of female artwork. As we have grown, the group has evolved into a connection between professional artists of all disciplines as well as to those artists in their early stages. The organization continues to establish a common ground where female artists can meet, inspire one another and grow from the experience.

May 13 at 7 pm
Merillat Centre for the Arts

Huntington University’s digital media arts program will host the Spring Showcase at 7 p.m. on May 13 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

There is no admission charge, and the event is open to the public. Popcorn and pop will be available.

This event is a screening of student productions. All digital media arts students in animation and live action had the option to submit work to be featured. Students’ work has been divided up into categories including animation, live action and senior projects. Once those projects have been shown, awards will be announced and then followed by a special raw and unplugged segment.

Some of the media to be featured in the Spring Showcase was already on display at the Graduating Digital Media Arts Majors Exhibit in the Robert E. Wilson Gallery that ended May 5. However, the Spring Showcase will present the completed version of those works.

“The senior exhibit takes place in the gallery setting and does not lend itself well to screening the finished production,” explained Sandy Hartle, digital media arts assistant

Sisters...Featuring Mixed Media Acrylics by Sue Davis & One of a Kind Dolls by Rebecca Dearing

At the Orchard Gallery from May 2-30, new mixed media pieces and acrylic paintings on canvas by Sue Davis. Built up layers of various materials, along with collage, create the rich textural surface for which her paintings are known. Sue will also show new mixed media pieces, made of clay and embellished with natural objects, such as a shell or beach stones. A calming color palette makes her work quite collectable and easy to incorporate into most any home.

Sue's sister, Rebecca Dearing from the Dayton Ohio area, will be showing her dolls alongside Sue's paintings. The two women have been looking forward to their appropriately named show, "Sisters..."

A statement from Sue about her work: My work is inspired by the environment around me, nature's spirit and the joy of exploration and discovery. I am fascinated by the rhythm, texture and vitality of natural forms. I take liberties with these forms and create new, yet related, images. I have always been drawn to small pieces of nature. I cannot resist picking up the smooth, dark stone, the piece of weathered bark, or the amazingly delicate little shell. I often find that I have one or more of these treasures in my pocket! I hope that my work projects a calm, contemplative atmosphere. One that encourages the viewer to slow down, take a deep calming breath.
I think about connectedness and reflect on a time when humanity held greater respect for the natural rhythms and cycles of the earth and moon.... a time when everyday life was very much influenced by these natural cycles and seasons.

Mayor Thanks Artists for Gifts Depicting Local Landmarks

Saying that the new Parkview Field is truly the community’s ballpark, Deputy Mayor Greg Purcell on behalf of Mayor Tom Henry helped cut the ribbon on a permanent collection of local artists’ work which will hang in the suite level lounge area at Parkview Field. Pieces depicting scenes from the Fort Wayne area will be on display.

“We know that Parkview Field is going to be the site of many exciting events, both sports-related and otherwise, “ said Mayor Tom Henry. “The inclusion of local artists’ work, especially work showing familiar scenes of our community, is just one more special touch in this beautiful facility.”

Charley Shirmeyer, owner of Northside Galleries, along with local artist Terry Ratliff (Ratart) and the TinCaps are collaborating to turn the suite level lounge public spaces into a gallery-like setting. Pieces slated for the initial display include depictions of downtown Fort Wayne’s Embassy Theater, the Allen County Courthouse and other local landmarks.

“We are thrilled to be a part of the excitement at Parkview Field,” Shirmeyer said. “We hope this artwork draws attention not only to the beauty of Fort Wayne, but also to the talented artists who call this area home.”

The ballpark’s suite level will host baseball fans for TinCaps games, as well as guests of special events such as receptions, parties and meetings.

“It is such a treat to have this art in our ballpark,” TinCaps team president Mike Nutter said. “We tried to give Parkview Field a unique, “Fort Wayne” feel and this artwork takes that to the next level.”

Several corporate and individual sponsors are working with Northside Galleries to defray the costs associated with the artwork. Those sponsors will receive acknowledgement in the form of a plaque which will be displayed next to each piece. A few pieces remain available for sponsorship.
