Karen Benedetti at Orchard Gallery

Joy of Music by Karen Benedetti: Abstract Paintings

June 2-30, 2010

Karen uses mostly acrylic: fluid acrylic, and some heavy bodied acrylic, sometimes combined with watercolor, on paper or canvas. She's been creating her artwork for about 50 years, but 20 years as a full time artist. Karen will show paintings inspired by music at The Orchard Gallery in June.

"I have always loved art. I have a degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin. I taught for a few years in Milwaukee. Then, I moved to Ohio and started to pursue Art as my full time passion and career. When my husband took early retirement, he became my assistant, and now we are in a partnership in the Art Business."
TECHNIQUE: "I paint using layers of acrylic, and use elements such as plastic wrap or waxed paper, to give texture to the surface. I layer colors, and sometimes scrape through to an underlying color. I love metallic foil to add glitzy excitement to the surface. I am good at design and contrast. I like to start with just paint, paper or canvas, and a few tools like a brush or scrap of matboard, and create a dynamic masterpiece; but sometimes it takes time to evaluate, with a few changes and additions, between layers.
INSPIRATION: My environment: Trees, Mountains, Urban elements, Water & shorelines… and sometimes purely abstract concepts, just shapes, colors and line.

OPEN: Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat: 10-5. Tues & Thurs: 10-7 .

Call for Artists--P.E.D.I.C.U.R.E. Art

Call for artists to paint public art pieces and invitation to participate in an art & music festival in the West Central neighborhood of Fort Wayne.

The concept of “P.E.D.I.C.U.R.E. Art” is a “farmer’s market” style art and music showcase to be held in Historic West Central Neighborhood, summertime monthly on the main entry corridor to the West of the City of Fort Wayne. Yards are to be used to accommodate artist displays and sidewalks are to be used to accommodate attendees.

The event will be on the second Saturdays of June, July and August, annually, to match the West Central Neighborhood Association Home/Garden Tour and Art Festival. Our project will be the perfect lead-in to the WCNA annual events that are held the second Saturday in September.

The idea is to keep the art show looking like an art show – not like a community garage sale. To help accomplish this, art will be hung on cast iron fences, “flower” carts as public art will be placed in the park strip, easels at each participating yard as to what vendors and items are available will be at the end of each block. Antiques – items a minimum of 50 years or older – may be offered if there are participating vendors.

The historic homes and outdoor atmosphere will help to evoke a feeling of “coming home” for participants, vendors and musicians. Lectures and performances given from the front porches and yards will add much to the ambient feel of the events in the old neighborhood. As we grow, we will add a teaching component of authors and other lecturers to promote sustainability through the arts, including sonic art and sound healing research.

Tents and umbrellas in the lawns will be provided by the artists, to shelter the artists, art and musicians. The tents/umbrellas will be in the participating yards along the corridor. Musicians will perform on the front lawns or porches, and our main advertising will be the 16,000 cars per day that go past our location. We will encourage local art galleries to participate and help us with a map design that can be posted at the central location on a bulletin board.

A local, outdoor event will provide very low cost booth/porch rental($25.00 per 10’ by 10’ per event).

Vendor artists and musicians should contact Tom Myers or Judy Cole at sonformula@hotmail.com.

Applicants for the public art project should submit a sketch of their proposal for the flower carts.
As soon as the prototype is complete, it will be posted on the FaceBook site for Pedicure Art. Sketches as applications to paint a public art piece will also be posted. All public art pieces will remain the property of Pedicure Art until the end of the season, at which time they may be auctioned to help fund the 2011 events. Artists, please keep in mind that these public art pieces are made of wood and will be outside for at least 10 weeks, so they will need some sort of sealant as protection.

The first public planning meeting will be Wednesday May 26th at 7 P.M. at 1016 Nelson. Everyone is invited. Please RSVP as seating is limited.

With the series, artists get a chance to talk with interested visitors, and the public can see where the artist creates.

“It’s a win-win situation for the artist and the public, and it furthers Artlink’s mission of exposing work by mid-career and emerging artists,” said Deb Washler, Artlink executive director. The series also enhances the educational mission of the not-for-profit contemporary art gallery.

Terry Ratliff is an award-winning artist whose work can be seen in private collections throughout the Midwest, most Casa restaurants and most recently at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.
