Digital media arts professor selected for IAC grant
The Indiana Arts Commission has selected Steve Leeper, Huntington University assistant professor of digital media arts, as a recipient of an Individual Artist Program Grant. Leeper will use the grant for the completion of his short animated film, “Moonboy and Shadow.”
“The film is about a young boy, his new camera, and a fascination with moonlight,” Leeper explained. “He sneaks out at midnight with his cat Shadow to capture their likeness in a late-night portrait aided by the light of the moon. Unknown to the boy – but suspected by his cat – the Moon is watching with great interest.”
“Moonboy and Shadow” grew out of the animation Leeper was doing while working on his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Boston. With the help of the IAC grant, Leeper plans to finish the film in time for the summer festival season in 2009.
Leeper is a filmmaker, storyteller and educator. Originally from the Midwest, Leeper studied animation, painting and drawing at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1997, he joined Big Idea Productions. Between 1998 and 2003, he served as layout supervisor for numerous productions including the feature film “Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie.”
Leeper is the animator/director of a number of short animated films, which have enjoyed both national and international exposure. He works closely with Masterpiece Ministries helping to create workshop experiences designed to encourage and educate young artists as they grapple with issues surrounding creativity and faith.
The Indiana Arts Commission advocates engagement with the arts to enrich the quality of individual and community life. The arts commission encourages the presence of the arts in communities of all sizes while promoting artistic quality and expression.
The arts commission created the Individual Artist Program in 1999 to supports artists, in all disciplines, for career development projects. The program cycle runs from July 1 to June 30 and offers flexibility to respond to artists’ needs and goals. Applicants must plan a project, or phase of a project, which can be realized within the requested budget and completed within the proposed timeline. Advisory panelists score applications from zero to 100 based on the following criteria: quality of the artist’s work, impact of the proposal on the artist’s career development and feasibility of project completion.

Computer Art Winners at Artlink
Winners have been announced for Artlink’s Digital Visions: Computer Art Exhibition which is in the main gallery through July 9. The winners were chosen by Dan Marsh, Assistant Design Professor from Michigan State University, Lansing.
First prize winner is Paho Mann of Denton, Texas, who received $800 for an interactive website which may be viewed in the gallery or on home computers by going to www.sort.pahomann.net. Mann’s amusing site painstakingly lists every item in his Texas apartment which observers can view and sort using a variety of criteria. Striking archival inkjet prints documenting the site’s output hang next to the computer. The prints display some of the available categories and include “Blue Plastic,” “Things I Never Use” and “Plastic the size of a Quarter.”
Second prize of $600 was picked up by Elizabeth Sher of Berkeley, California. Sher’s winning piece entitled “Reggie” is composed of four archival ink prints of a dog in motion presented on a 30” by 40” backlit light box. The viewer listens to an audio text on a battery operated CD player presented by a man who tells a tender story of rehabilitation with the help of nature and a good pet.
Eric Stine of Indianapolis, formerly of Fort Wayne, won the $400 third prize for “Jasper – Alt.” The image of a smiley-faced dog was digitally created, but looks as though it was painted by hand in loose, watercolor fashion.
Marsh who heads up the Design Initiative at MSU chose from a field of work produced by 17 artists from across the country. Quoting from his statement: “…some important contemporary issues raised by artists…are as old as humankind, and our technologies provide new lenses with which to look at and question ourselves and our environment. The works selected here represent a broad range of approaches and intent, but each establishes itself with its unique vision and accomplished production.”
Other local artists in this exhibit include Fort Wayne multi-media artist Daniel Dienelt, Andrea Hoelscher of Ferdinand, whose inkjet prints explore familiar architectural spaces, Luke Nimtz of Cromwell whose piece “Kronos” is a digital modeling, animation and rendering done in Maya, and textures in Photoshop, and James Merz of Fort Wayne who also presents a video.
