In an attempt to collect a stronger artist directory for use in the distribution of information to artists (grants, workshops, etc), and the production of Last
Saturdays events, we have created this artist survey.

This is a short, seven question survey, designed to collect contact information, descriptions of the artist's work, and get a better idea of what assets artists need to increase their production.

Please spread the word about this survey by sending it to your friends, co-workers, and organizations that might be interested in sharing it with artists with which they work. Also, please fill out the survey if you are an artist!

We are looking for visual artists, musicians, fashion designers, writers, curators, composers, film-makers, graphic designers, architects, educators who produce work, students, and anyone else who creates objects and experiences in Northeast Indiana. We want to create as comprehensive a list as possible, and account for the diversity within our creative community, which many times gets overlooked.

The Wilson Gallery, located in the Merillat Centre for the Arts, is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., before and after all MCA performances and by appointment.

“Stephen Perfect: 40 Years of Photography” will be a retrospective exhibition demonstrating Perfect’s variety of photographic techniques. It will include 30 different types of photographs, from historical techniques to the newest forms of digital manipulation within the photographic medium. The photographer’s ability to experiment with developing and transfer techniques, in addition to his unique command of composition, from landscape to still-life to abstraction, will be explored.

Trench Art: Productive Pastimes from the Debris of War
January 14 - February 26, 2012

Trench Art is commonly and broadly defined as any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. Common articles that this includes are decorated, or modified shell or bullet casings, mess kits, helmets, and similar items at hand to a soldier at war. This type of art was a frequent souvenir of soldiers of the first half of the 20th century, and is often still found in the homes of veterans or their descendants.

The exhibitions is a collaboration with the Museum of the Soldier, Portland, Indiana and guest curated by FWMoA Technical Director Brian K. Williamson. Williamson is a founding board member and Vice President of the Museum of the Soldier as well as a Master Sergeant in the Indiana National Guard scheduled for a tour in Afghanistan in early 2012.

Active Military Personnel and Veterans will be admitted free with valid ID.

Cabinet of Curiosities: Works from the Collection
January 21 - February 26, 2012

Wunderkammer, or "Cabinets of Curiosities," arose in mid 16th century Europe as repositories for all manner of wondrous and exotic objects. In many ways, these are seen as precursors to the modern museum. Cabinet of Curiosities will bring together disparate works from the FWMoA's Collections highlighting and juxtaposing their differences in time period, media, function and the object's relationship to the definition of art. Challenge yourself to explore the links between 19th century tableware, a Japanese Urn, contemporary ceramics and mid 20th century studio glass; the results may surprise you! Included artists will range from nationally recognized makers to those with local Fort Wayne connections. Several of the works have not been displayed previously at FWMoA, and additional works have not been on display in recent years-find out what 'curious' objects the Museum owns!

Studio artist Carrie Longley is a nationally recognized ceramicist. She has received numerous awards including the Bobby Kadis Award at the Penland School of Crafts and a MCACD Individual Artist Fellowship. Her work focuses on the relationship between science specimen and precious art object. Erin Holscher Almazan is an emerging artist in printmaking and also an assistant professor at the University of Dayton. Her prints also focus on the natural world and science.

"My recent work has been in the form of face plates and intricate surface designs on various bottle and vase forms. The face plates express the duality of human nature: everyone has a dark side and a light side. The surface designs on the thrown forms are influenced by imagery from travels in the American West, where Native Americans use symbols to express spirituality and the relationship of human beings to the earth and our place in the universe. The symbols I use are adapted from Oriental, Meso-American, Native American, and other world cultures."

Recycled Mixed Media Picture Frame
Tuesday, December 27, 1 – 3 p.m.

Art Farm artist extraordinaire, Lisa Vetter will show you how to create a personalized and artsy picture frame from recycled materials. For collaging, students should bring some paper supplies, cereal or cracker boxes, favorite magazines or colored tissues. Also bring favorite little items, small shells or beads to personalize your frame. Lisa provides basic construction items, Modge-Podge, scissors, glue, some 2-D materials.

Artist and Fort Wayne teacher, Jeremy McFarren, teaches storytelling and pacing in comic book and cartooning forms. Learn how to drive a narrative with style and substance; learn how to avoid the pitfalls of bad storytelling. Students should have basic drawing skills. Bring good black markers – Sharpies, Pitts or Microns. No ballpoint pens please. Paper will be supplied.

Painting with Terry Ratliff

Spend an afternoon with Fort Wayne’s premier painter, Terry Ratliff. You don’t have to be a trained artist to participate. Remember, we’re here to have fun! Terry will guide you in painting your own still life. A creative spirit is the only prerequisite to this class. Beverages will be served. Students will paint in acrylics on canvas board which Terry has primed and toned. Bring an apron or old shirt to paint in. If you are an artist, bring your own acrylics and brushes!

Make Stuff with Duct Tape

Amy Clark, FWCS art teacher, will teach you how to make cool stuff – a purse or wallet out of all-purpose duct tape. Students bring a roll of their favorite color duct tape – found at most hardware stores.

Amy Clark, FWCS art teacher, will guide and direct students as they decorate their found objects with Sharpie markers using their own personal flair! Students can bring their own found object to decorate or Amy will have bowling pins available. Artlink will provide both black and colored Sharpies.

Stencil Art
Thursday, December 29, 2 – 4 p.m.
6th grade through adults, $36 General Public, $31 Artlink Members

Creative stencil artist Jason Rowland will show you how to cut and spray paint your own stencil. This exciting technique is a great way to add graphic style to your art. Bring your own surface to paint on, such as a piece of thick paper, flat wood, or canvas; and bring a mask to use while spraying. Students should bring a design they would like to paint. High contrast, sharp-edged images work best for stenciling. Artlink provides all spray paint and other needed materials.

Beginner’s Knitting
Friday, December 30, 1 – 3 p.m.
All-age appropriate, $29 General Public, $24 Artlink Members

Clare Tarr, knitting pro, will show you the basic knitting stitch and you can start knitting your own scarf! Bring number 9 or 10 knitting needles; Clare will provide the yarn.

Wire Trees
Friday, December 30, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
1st through 8th grade (grades 1 through 5 must be accompanied by an adult), $36 General Public, $31 Artlink Members

Heather Miller will guide children in making their own individual wire tree out of aluminum wire and other materials. Children will twist and pull materials to create gnarled and unique topiaries. Trees can reach 1 foot tall. Heather has taught children for 15 years and currently teaches at Avilla’s Montessori school. All supplies will be provided.

Award Winners Opens at Artlink

The regional Award Winners exhibition opens at Artlink’s Main Gallery with a gallery walk-through and reception on Friday, December 9 beginning at 6 p.m. Participating artists will discuss their work and answer questions from the gallery. The reception continues until 9:00 p.m. The three winners of Artlink’s 2011 Regional Exhibition won the opportunity for a three-person show in Artlink’s Main Gallery. Winners include Fort Wayne artists Justin Johnson, drawings and George Morrison, ceramist. Jake Saunders, the third winner, is a printmaker from Huntington.

The three winners will fill Artlink’s new home at the Auer Center for Arts and Culture, 300 E. Main Street in Fort Wayne, with recently produced artwork. All are talented artists from the region who show purpose and skill in making their artwork. The public is invited to talk with the artists on opening night at Artlink where they will be available for questions. Justin Johnson received his MFA from the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, and is currently curator of the gallery at the University and an exceptional draftsman. George Morrison, ceramist, is a retired architect and a skilled craftsman. Jake Saunders is a printmaker from Huntington. He will be showing prints and paintings. Saunders received his MFA in Studio Art in 2009 from the University of Connecticut; his MA and BFA in Printmaking from Ball State University.

Artlink’s Artsy-Fun Workshops Begin

Artlink is offering an ongoing series called Artsy-Fun Workshops for creative children and for adults who are not necessarily artists but are artistically inclined. On Saturday, December 3, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Artlink presents a Paper Pulp Painting workshop conducted by Heather Miller. Children of all ages can participate. Miller will demonstrate the art of painting with paper pulp. Students will make the pulp, then design and execute their very own painting. Workshop fee is $28 for Artlink members and $33 for the general public. All supplies will be provided by Miller and Artlink. The Individual Artist Program (IAP) was created in 1999 to provide support to artists in all disciplines for career development projects. Artlink, a not-for-profit contemporary art gallery, has put out a call for entry for its 32nd Annual National Print Exhibition. All artists at least 18 years of age residing in the United States are eligible to exhibit. All original, hand-pulled printmaking techniques are eligible. No photographic, computer generated or digitally altered prints will be accepted. Artists must complete an entry form and enclose an entry fee of $25 ($20 for Artlink members). Three images may be submitted with slides or by e-mail with jpegs sent as attachments. Submission of entries by CD will not be accepted. Entries must be postmarked by January 11, 2012. Guidelines and prospectus can be downloaded at www.artlinkfw.com or mail a request to Artlink, Auer Center for Arts and Culture, 300 E. Main St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802. A catalogue will be available for each artist accepted into the exhibition.

This year’s juror will be Ladislav Hanka, who earned a MS in Zoology and an MFA in Printmaking in 1981. Hanka, an independent artist and curator, has studied in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic where he apprenticed in stamp engraving. Through the generosity of the Lincoln Financial Group Foundation, Hanka will be awarding $2,500 in cash prizes which he will select from the original artwork.

New Schedule and Cost for Artlink Figure Drawing

Artlink announces a new schedule and cost for its Figure Drawing Sessions at the new location, 300 E. Main Street, Fort Wayne, IN, 46802. The sessions are now being held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the new figure drawing studio at the Auer Center for Arts and Culture. Artists may drop in at any time during the sessions which are run on a continuous basis with no semester breaks or registration necessary. Cost for the drop-in sessions are now $3 per hour and are open to the general public. Artlink supplies chairs, drawing boards, easels and a model. Artists should bring their choice of art supplies.

Artlink’s gallery hours in the new space are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., Thursday noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

This exhibition will feature an original poster collection from the Hamilton Wood Type Museum. These posters were handset using vintage wood type from the Hamilton collection by award-winning designers and typesetters from around the world. Also on exhibit will be a letterpress installation by Hamilton Assistant Director, Stephanie (Fenstermaker) Carpenter. She is a graduate of USF and has an MFA from Indiana University. Courier Printing Company of Allen County, located in Grabill, Indiana, will also be displaying a collection of letterpress printed pieces from their collection. Courier is one of the only letterpress printers in the region and the corporate and printing sponsor of this exhibition.

The Lecture on October 27th with Jim Moran will be in the North Campus Auditorium at 7:30 PM. Moran, Executive Director of the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum will speak about the collection and work of this unique museum. It is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production, and printing of wood type. With 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton's collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world. The Lotus Holiday Show is an end of year show which features the wide variety of styles and talent in Fort Wayne. All media are acceptable for submission. Previous years' shows have seen knitting right next to oil paintings and ceramics. There is no entry fee and artists may submit multiple pieces. The RSVP deadline is October 22nd! The School of Creative Arts (SOCA) at the University of Saint Francis is sponsoring its annual trip to the Art Institute of Chicago on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011. The trip is open to the public.

A chartered bus will leave the Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication on Leesburg Road at 7:30 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at around 11:30 a.m. The bus will leave Chicago at 6 p.m. and arrive back in Fort Wayne at 10 p.m. Cost is $40.

George McCullough: The Tribute Show

The tribute represents the complete works of George McCullough who died at age 82 in 2005. McCullough's paintings span from his early studies, to the golden era of the Fort Wayne Art School (where he taught when it was located on West Berry Street) and beyond. At that time, the Castle Gallery building housed the Fort Wayne Municipal Art Museum.

After receiving his BFA and MFA degrees from Iowa State University, McCullough was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study art at the Academia Belle Arti in Florence and the Academie de la Grande Caumiere in Paris. During his Fort Wayne career, McCullough was an artist, art teacher for the Fort Wayne Art Institute and Associate Professor of Art at IPFW, retiring in 1984. McCullough and fellow art professors created a period of unprecedented productivity and joie de vivre which influenced students and the community at large. Their work hearkens back to an era when art took center stage.

George McCullough was born on January 22, 1923 and died October 15, 2005. George's surviving wife, Sue, and Joel Fremion are currently curators of the collection. All works will be for sale at Castle Gallery for the duration of the show.

Scholarship Opportunity for Upcoming High School Graduates

Roanoke Arts Council invites applications to the 2011-2012 Roanoke Arts Council High School Art Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize a graduating high school senior who has exhibited artistic excellence in visual arts and who plans to pursue further education in the visual arts. Applications will be accepted from high school seniors graduating in June 2012 who are currently attending public or private school in Indiana. Applicants must be Allen, Dekalb, Huntington, Grant, LaGrange, Miami, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells or Whitley County residents. The Roanoke Arts Council Scholarship will be paid directly to the student's selected school to assist with tuition.

The complete application must be received or postmarked no later than September 26, 2011. Applicants will be judged by a panel of professionals with a high level of expertise in college arts education and/or professional experience. Selection of a scholarship winner will be based on artistic excellence as demonstrated by the quality of the work samples and application submitted to the panel. Dedication and character will also be considered.

Scholarship winner will be announced Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Renaissance in Roanoke. All scholarship finalists will have one original work to exhibited in the Roanoke Arts Council High School Art Scholarship Exhibit October 8, 2011 in conjunction with the Renaissance in Roanoke.

Huntington University Art Students--Bowls for Homeless

On Saturday, the art students will be working on these bowls so feel free to come by for photos or interviews. It should be a very neat experience! They will be working in the Studio Art Center (the new brick building by the Graduate School) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Huntington University art students are using their talents to aid the homeless in local communities. In partnership with Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Fort Wayne Inc., students will be creating ceramic bowls for an empty bowls project. The students will be creating 200 bowls through wheel throwing and hand-built ceramics. The bowls will be used at an Interfaith event on Oct. 16, 2011.
“I wanted to do the empty bowls project this year because it's a great way to get the whole art department working together on a single project,” said senior Alan Hay. “It's also a project with purpose that helps the community around us.”
Interfaith Hospitality Network’s mission is to serve homeless families by uniting faith community volunteers and local agencies in a cooperative effort to provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive, compassionate and ongoing support.

Fiber artists Kim Reiff and Sara Nordling are “Stitched Together” on Friday, September 16, 2011 with an artists’ reception from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. at the Continuum Art Gallery in downtown Fort Wayne.

On their own, Reiff and Nordling create dynamic tapestries of color and texture. Reiff found inspiration for her series “Journey” in Maya Angelou’s words, “I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now,” (1993) and invites the viewer to begin their own journey of discovery as they experience the visual and tactile nature of her artwork. Nordling’s approach to her weaving is to, “let the visual language of the interlacement of threads speak for itself in the works I make. It has a rich language of its own.” Together they combine layers of dreams, magic, and history to weave a unique, but unified story about the human experience. The exhibit is on display until October 1, 2011.

The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis will unveil a renowned artwork commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy as part of “2011 Presidential Gala: Bruno Surdo, Figurative Paintings,” its signature event opening the school year. The Gala will open Sept. 10 from 6-9 p.m. in the Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Center for Visual Art and Communication. The exhibit will be open for viewing through Oct. 23.

Surdo, a Chicago native, is the Gala’s study subject and the painter of “Tragedy, Memory, & Honor,” a 9-by-35-foot work in oil on canvas with elements of collage. Surdo flew to New York City shortly after the disaster, where he observed first-hand the indescribable carnage in the aftermath of the attack on the city’s Twin Towers.

Painted on five panels, “Tragedy, Memory, & Honor” memorializes the horrifying tragedy that without warning killed thousands of innocents—changing lives and altering the appearance and perception of New York in the eyes of the world forever. Thickly painted in impasto and collaged with debris collected from the site, the painting is overwhelming in its acute depiction of the fathomless destruction which will forever leave an indelible scar on humanity.

Surdo is an award-winning artist who has exhibited widely nationally and internationally. He has studied figurative drawing and painting in the United States and Europe. While studying in Italy, he perfected his knowledge of artistic human anatomy, pictorial composition, landscape painting and still-life depictions. In preparation for Artlink's move to the new Auer Center for Arts and Culture in late September, Artlink will be holding a moving sale at 437 E. Berry Street, on Saturday, August 27, from noon until 9 p.m. and on Sunday, August 28, from 1 to 5 p.m. The sale is open to the general public and will include artwork left at the gallery from previous shows as well as office items and display units. Artlink members are invited to bring in items for the sale as well.

Members wishing to sell or donate artwork or art supplies are asked to deliver items on Thursday, August 25 from noon to 5 p.m. and on Friday, August 26 from noon to 9 p.m. Artlink will retain 35% of each sale and 100% of each donated sale item. Items not sold need to be picked up on Sunday, August 28, 2011, from noon to 5 pm. All items not sold will be donated to a local charity on Monday, August 29, 2011.

Artlink Contemporary Art Gallery, Fort Wayne, has issued a Call for Entry for 100 Years of Connectivity: George Kessler Park and Boulevard System, which opens in Artlink’s new space at the Auer Center for Arts and Culture on Friday, October 21 from 6 to 10 p.m. Artists 18 years of age or older are invited to exhibit one piece of their original artwork depicting the George Kessler Park and Boulevard System to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Kessler was hired to supervise the revision of the Fort Wayne park system and beautify the river banks; he was an integral part of making the urban landscape what it is today. This non-juried show runs at Artlink through November 30, 2011. Artists must register as a participant by August 27. For subject matter, a map of the George Kessler Park and Boulevard System can be downloaded at Artlink’s website (www.artlinkfw.com) and is available in the gallery.

Artwork in all media, two or three-dimensional, is eligible. Maximum size is 48” in any direction, including the frame; maximum weight is 50 pounds including the base if sculptural. All artwork must meet Artlink’s criteria regarding quality. Criteria can be found at www.artlinkfw.com. Work must be hand delivered to Artlink, at its new location, 300 E. Main Street, Fort Wayne between October 8 and October 16 during gallery hours. Artlink will be open Tues.-Sat. noon to 6 p.m., Thurs. noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Late entries will NOT be accepted. There is no entry fee for Artlink members. Award-winning artist and author Kadir Nelson spent seven years researching, writing, and creating handsome paintings to be included in the brilliantly illustrated book, WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball. The exhibition includes original oil paintings and sketches, all of which are dedicated to the preservation of the history of Negro Leagues. WE ARE THE SHIP is the story of gifted athletes and determined owners, racial discrimination and international sportsmanship, fortunes won and lost, and triumphs and defeats on and off the field. It is a perfect mirror for the social and political history of Black America in the first half of the 20th century. But most of all, the story of the Negro League is about hundreds of unsung heroes who overcame segregation, hatred, terrible conditions, and low pay to do the one thing they loved more than anything else in the world: play ball.

Currently up in Artlink’s Main Gallery is the popular Members’ Show. Artlink artist members are invited once a year to exhibit one piece of their original artwork in this non-juried show. This year, close to 200 members responded for a very exciting show in all imaginable media. The show will be up through August 9, 2011.

The public is invited to come in and vote for their five favorite artists. At the close of the show each of the top vote getters will receive a gift certificate from the downtown pizzeria, 816 Pint and Slice located at 816 South Calhoun Street and a $20 cash prize from Artlink. And generously donating gift certificates toward framing are Southwest Studio on Engle Road, Papier’s Creative Framing on North Anthony and Northside Galleries, located on East State Street.

In the Push Pin Gallery are drawings from Artlink’s Figure Drawing Sessions. Fourteen artists are displaying their drawings done in various media, most in pencil, charcoal, Conte and ink. Drawers meet in Artlink’s basement from 7 to 10 p.m. twice a week. Monday night sessions are “long-pose” night and usually consist of an hour-long pose, and two shorter poses. Wednesday night is “short-pose” night, which means poses are no longer than 20 minutes. Both sessions begin with 30 minutes of quick, warm-up poses, usually 5 minutes in length. Artistic, non-Artlink members are invited to drop in and draw with the group.

Native Tongue: Native American Works from the Collection

Native Tongue: Native American Works from the Collection follows the presentation of the 1976 Kent Bicentennial Portfolio, which challenged 20th century artists to portray a contemporary idea of independence to further the conversation. Several artists in the Portfolio asserted that independence is a complex topic and is often achieved through the expense or sacrifice of another entity.

Native Tongue builds on this narrative by exploring and presenting the Fort Wayne Museum of Art's Collections of traditional Native American artifacts as well as contemporary artworks by artists of Native American descent. Works by Woody Wilson Crumbo, Maria Martinez, Truman Lowe, Fritz Scholder, Duane Slick, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith are joined by traditional art forms such as baskets, pottery and weavings from the Hopi, Acoma, Maricopa, Pima, Akimel, O'Odham and Navajo cultures, among others.

Call for Indiana Wildlife Artists to Exhibit at Honeywell Center this Fall

Application Deadline: July 22, 2011

The 28th Annual Exhibit of the Indiana Wildlife Artists will be hosted at the Honeywell Center in Wabash, Indiana.

Awards: Cash

Eligibility: Open to US artists w/ serious approach to wildlife/botanical art.

Media: Oil, watercolor, pastel, drawings, photography, digital, carving, sculpture, etc.

Size/other restrictions: Must be WILD (not domestic) animals/plants. A total maximum allocation of space for each artist will be 2,500 sq. inches. For example, 40"x40" piece equals 1,600 sq. inches and a 18"x24" canvas with a 2" frame (20"x26") equals 520 sq. inches both totaling 2,120 sq. inches. 3D max height is 28" with a max base of 18" and max weight of 25 lbs. 3D must be free standing and durable with no installation required.

Entry fee: $30 for up to 3 pieces for non IWA members.

Juror(s): Juried by one fine artist plus one naturalist. 4" x 6" photos or digital images will be required for Jury.

Show/event dates: September 10 to October 10, 2011

Sales commission: 20%

Insurance: Responsibility of the Artist
