Wheels opens at Artlink on Friday, June 1

Wheels to Open at Artlink

Friday, June 1 - July 11, 2012
Opening Reception on Friday, June 1, 2012:
Gallery Walk-through at 6:00 p.m. with reception to 9:00 p.m.

COST: Free for Artlink members; $2 suggested donation for the public

The art exhibition Wheels opens at Artlink in the Main Gallery (which includes the Mirro Family Foundation Gallery and the Sauerteig Family Gallery) on Friday, June 1. There will be a Gallery Walk-through at 6:00 p.m. with three participating artists talking about their work and answering questions from the gallery audience. The reception will continue until 9:00 p.m. The exhibit will be up through July 11, 2012.

Area artists were invited to exhibit one piece of their original artwork utilizing any and all media to interpret the theme of “wheels” for this non-juried show. Among the almost 70 artists participating in the show are photographers Mary and Don Gagnon, Michelle Diller, Fred Kissinger and Cathie Rowand; mixed media artist, Patrice Farmer and oil painters Al McLuckie and Katherine Rohrbacher.

Featured artwork in the smaller Betty Fishman Gallery will be by University of Saint Francis students from the f/8 Photo Club. This show will be up through July 11. Cara Wade, UFS Associate Professor of Photography states that on exhibit will be the work of 13 students, freshman through graduate level and includes analog, alternative and digital photographic processes. These processes include Mordancage, Gum Bichromate, Studio, Photoshop manipulation, darkroom, digital imaging, large format and combinations of processes. Wade says, “Our goal is to expand students’ knowledge of photography. The students don’t have to be photo majors to be in this club. Kids who join simply love the art of photography and making photographs.” The quality of this exhibit will prove that to the viewers.

The Wheels exhibition was made possible through the generosity of our sponsors: Don Ayres Honda, Fort Wayne Outfitters & Bike Depot, Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, Indiana Arts Commission - Regional Partnership Grant. We encourage the public to shop local as Fort Wayne Outfitters, 1004 Cass Street, will have biking apparel and accessories on sale from June 3 to 9, when a percentage of their sales will be donated to Artlink.

Infinite Mirror at FWMoA

Infinite Mirror: American Identity
May 17, 2012 - July 15, 2012
Fort Wayne Museum of Art

Thursday May 31, 2012 from 6:30-8:30 PM: Evening of Spoken Word, followed by reception

Amid the powerful portraits of America's culture, join us for an inspiring night of poetry featuring Ketu Oladuwa, Helen Frost, Curtis Crisler and George Kalamaras. Each will read pieces sparked by the artwork in the exhibition Infinite Mirror: Images of American Identity.

This exhibition features 63 multi-media works including paintings, works on paper, photographs and video by culturally diverse artists from across the United States. Infinite Mirror is realized through the collective efforts of Artrain, Inc. and a group of independent curators selecting works of art by established and emerging American artists.

The central theme is the use of portraiture and figuration as symbols for emotional and social ideas. Artwork in the exhibition uses portraiture to depict circumstances and experiences of multicultural populations in present-day America. The artwork is personal, reflective, autobiographical and of a high technical quality, creating an exhibition that is both visually beautiful as well as socially relevant. The exhibition includes the work of first generation Americans and emerging new immigrant artists that examines issues and themes of race, gender, religion, history, politics and family. Included are such internationally renowned artists as Luis Jimenez, Tomie Arai, Elizabeth Catlett and Faith Ringgold.

Thanks to the generosity of Lincoln Financial Foundation, Artlink presented $2,200 in cash awards to the nation’s best printmakers from its 32nd Annual National Print Exhibition. Lincoln has been the print show’s sponsor for the past 17 years. For 32 years, Artlink has sent out a call for entry to every university in the United States that has a print department. This year the exhibition was curated and the award winners were selected by Ladislav R. Hanka of Kalamazoo, Michigan. 45 printmakers from 26 states were selected by Hanka to exhibit 71 hand-pulled prints. The exhibit opened on April 13 and will continue through May 23 at the Auer Center, 300 E. Main Street, Fort Wayne. All artwork is for sale.

Seven Indiana artists are included in this exhibition. Fort Wayne artists include Art Cislo, art instructor from the University of Saint Francis, who was an award winner, and Christopher Ganz, IPFW’s print professor. Jon Detweiler of Roanoke was awarded the top prize of $300 for his zinc plate etching, Warm and Windy. David B. Johnson and his wife Sarojini Jha Johnson of Muncie, both print instructors at Ball State University made the cut with Sarojini winning a prize. Also included were Judy Leiviska of Indianapolis and Julie Wall Toles from Huntertown. A free print catalogue listing all participants is available at the gallery, along with a glossary of print terminology.

The juror, Ladislav R. Hanka of Kalamazoo, Michigan, received his MFA in Printmaking from Western Michigan University and has been exhibiting nationally and internationally since the 1980’s.

Janet Webb presents her newest mixed metal jewelry with a focus on ornate hollow
forms. Her colorful resin accented jewelry will also be on display. Janet is a member of the Orchard Gallery. Her husband, David is our other featured artists this month. Both artists are from nearby Marion, Indiana.

Inspired by the pointillist style, David Webb shows his modern, abstract landscapes in acrylic, watercolor & ink on canvas, paper & wood. The use of many colors, along with overlapping paint & textures lends a great depth of field to David's work. What FUN to have a husband & wife featured together!
