Goodbye to this blog

In 2005, the Art, Music & Media department of the Allen County Public Library started this blog to supplement our Fort Wayne Area Artists database. The point of this blog was to bring attention to current exhibits and opportunities to participate in the visual arts in and around Fort Wayne. It's been fun to help others find events and ways to explore the visual arts in Fort Wayne via this blog.

Recently the library has adopted a Social Media Strategy. Unfortunately, this blog does not align with this strategy, so we will be discontinuing it.

The library will continue to offer information on Fort Wayne Area Artists via our database.

If you would be interested in taking over this blog, keeping it as an open forum for all Fort Wayne area visual artists, please contact us by May 10, 2012 at amv@acpl.info.

Thanks to everyone who helped support this blog and local artists! I hope you take time this spring to continue to support the arts and the artists in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. (The Arts United campaign for 2012 is in full swing!)

We have a fan page where anyone interested can get updates & a map: http://www.facebook.com/ArtStudioTour. Printed maps will be available at several local businesses, including The Orchard Gallery, Artlink & Firefly in Fort Wayne, plus Higher Grounds & Leo Cafe in Leo.

Viewing an artists work, visiting with them and seeing where they create the work....all at once...it's a unique experience and one that our attendees have really enjoyed. Dear Downtown Photography Contest + Bright Nights photo contest TONIGHT

Dear Downtown Photography Contest
Begins Thursday, April 5, 2012 with annual Bright Nights photo contest

The Downtown Improvement District is collaborating with ARCH to host a new contest for local photographers to capture the beauty of downtown Fort Wayne while interacting with the heritage of our community!

Dear Downtown is a unique way of seeing our city and expressing our connection to it. Local photographers are asked to recreate historic images of downtown by splicing or juxtaposing them with physical locations of today. For examples of this effect, visit www.dearphotograph.com.

The contest begins April 5, 2012, which is opening night for the TinCaps at Parkview Field. We are also asking all of Fort Wayne and Allen County's creative talents to join us over the next six weeks to photograph all of downtown's rich cultural and architectural beauty, night life, and atmosphere through our history and memories, be it a wedding at the Embassy, Botanical, or Courthouse, childhood photos of you and your friends at Coney Island, or images of your Great Grandpa's law office.

As an incentive, the best images will be announced and curated into an exhibition and will include three cash prizes!

The winning photographs will be chosen by the Downtown Improvement District (DID) and ARCH staff. Judging will take place after the entry deadline, and award winning photographers will be notified by Monday, May 21st, 2012.

For more information, contact the DID at (260) 420-3266 or dswartz[at]downtownfortwayne.com or jenna[at]downtownfortwayne.com

Decatur Sculpture Walk planned for August 23rd

Decatur Sculpture Walk
Decatur, IN
Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 6:00 PM

The North Adams Arts Council with the help of celebrated artist, Greg Mendez, and community volunteers are creating the Decatur Sculpture Walk which will launch on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 6:00 pm.

Artists must be at least 18 years old and live within 150 miles of Decatur. The entry fee is $10 per sculpture. Entries will be critiqued based on artistic merit, public safety, and durability in an outdoor setting. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2012. Notification of the selection committee's decision will be made by June 1. Installation date is Thursday, August 23, 2012.

More information: To sponsor the sculpture walk or for artists interested in participating in the sculpture walk, please contact The Decatur Chamber of Commerce (260.724.2604) or email your questions to: decatursculpture@apls.lib.in.us. For more information on the City of Decatur, visit decaturin.org. For more information on the Kekionga Festival visit kekiongafestival.com.

Submissions will be juried and only the best pieces will be featured in the downtown walking tour. The committee will select a total of eight outdoor works of art and will feature an additional number of indoor works presented in downtown business window displays.

Visitors will have walking tour maps and be able to vote to select a People's Choice work of art. The featured art will be for sale with the proceeds being shared between the artists and the committee to promote future Decatur Sculpture Walk events and to begin purchasing permanent art for the community.

Greg Mendez, the chair of the Decatur Sculpture Walk committee and veteran sculpture walk artist, shared his passion for creating a new sculpture walk in his hometown. "As I experience other sculpture walks around the country, it's energizing to see people enjoying art in public spaces. It's a way for the public to commune with one another in appreciation or examination of something new and unusual, yet they appear to have a very personal and singular experience. I don't know of any other art endeavor that is quite like it." Mendez has had pieces selected for the sculpture walk in the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The event has already received wide endorsement from the business community who will be participating through sponsorships and other related events. The Decatur Sculpture Walk unveiling will happen in association with the extremely popular Kekionga Festival. The events complement each other well as visitors can enjoy both activities as they stroll through the historic downtown in the shadow of the signature Victorian courthouse that was built in 1873 and is still in use by the county government. The Decatur Rivergreenway, a 4 mile walking trail along the St. Marys River and around town, begins downtown and follows the former Nickel Plate/Norfolk Southern Railroad and Erie-Lackawanna Railroad featuring a spectacular double-wide iron truss bridge over the river.
