The prize winner is entitled “Scaredy Cat.” Both prints depict a young person standing next to a life-size Pez candy dispenser. Bolton stated, “I was tempted to sneak out of the gallery with Ella’s two prints under my coat – they are just that good.” Prizes of $200 each were won by Christopher Register of Rice, Virginia, Josh Winkler of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Yuji Hiratsuka of Corvallis, Oregon and Matthew Egan of Greenville, North Carolina. Prizes of $150 each were won by Leslie Grossman of Knoxville, Tennessee and Art Werger of Athens, Ohio. Artlink to Move to Auer Center in Fall 2011
On Monday, April 18, Artlink’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to move the 33 year-old not-for-profit contemporary art gallery from its current location at 437 E. Berry Street to a new home in the Auer Center for Arts and Culture (formerly the Fourth Wave Building) located at 300 E. Main Street, Fort Wayne. The Center was recently purchased by Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, the umbrella organization for non-profit arts and cultural groups in Northeast Indiana. The Center will also house Arts United, the Fort Wayne Ballet and Fort Wayne Trails. The facility is directly across the street from the Arts United Center, Fort Wayne Museum of Art and Freimann Square. Arts United will be renovating the new space which should be ready for Artlink to move in by this fall.
Deb Washler, Artlink’s Executive Director, said, “This is such an exciting and positive move for Artlink. The new space will enable us to serve even more area artists with a larger exhibition space and with the addition of classrooms for workshops and our figure drawing sessions. This is also an exciting opportunity to help build the arts campus in downtown Fort Wayne. We’re very excited to share the space with the other organizations.”
Artlink was started by a group of artists in the Broadway apartment of Bruce Linker in the 1970’s. A legitimate gallery space was soon established across Broadway in a building shared by the Fort Wayne Dance Collective. This space was later purchased by the Three Rivers Natural Food Co-op. In 1978, Artlink was incorporated as a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit art gallery. Artlink’s third move was a bit further north on Broadway at Washington Boulevard where it stayed until 1991 when Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne renovated its current home at the Hall Community Art Center, 437 E. Berry Street.

Art Dolls at Orchard Gallery in May

Art Dolls: Featuring Clare Tarr, The Dollmakers, Rebecca Dearing, Sharon Snoeyink, Michelle Sapp & More!
May 3-31, 2011
This is a group exhibition by some of the region's most popular dollmakers. Local artist, Clare Tarr, will have some of her "monsters", made of recycled fabrics, old ties and buttons. Sharon Snoeyink, of Grand Rapids MI, has sent a beautiful variety. Sharon says about her work, "I believe that all people are created with individual and unique talents. God's gift to me is the ability to creatively combine colors and textures. This flair for design, color and texture became apparent when as a child I began to design clothes for my dolls. Now, my designs include making the doll as well as all the clothing and accessories. The dollmaking process begins by first needle-sculpting the head out of fabric, covering it with an air-drying clay, detailing the clay with dental tools and jewelry files. The clay is painted with acrylic paint and finished with colored pencils. Next, I choose fabrics from my collection of unique fabrics stacked on the shelves in my studio, carefully combining the colors and textures until I feel excited by the combination. Beads, charms and unique trim add personality to the figure. Shoes are designed and constructed. Hair is styled from dyed natural silk and wool, yarns, fur or beads."
Michelle Sapp's dolls are inspired by her African heritage. "The Dollmakers" are a mother-daughter team from Michigan. They are creating some "special" dolls for this exhibition. (Above right: Doll by "The Dollmakers".) They typically have a theme for each doll and each is unique. Rebecca Dearing, from Ohio, will have her whimsical dolls on display, as well.

Natalie McChessney Exhibit
Continuum Art Gallery
April 22, 2011- May 20, 2011
Opening Reception: April 22, 2011 from 6-9 PM
Natalie McChessney opens her first solo show at the Continuum Art Gallery on April 22, 2011 with an artists reception at 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. McChessney transitions from her roots in oil painting with watercolors to explore her growth as an artist inspired by the South Carolina shoreline in Embracing Watercolors. According to McChessney: "In this collection of work I examine the dualities of life found within water. It has the ability to reflect with such clarity while it remains ambiguous with mysterious undercurrents. Water is essential to life- yet it is unyielding and suffocating." She plays upon these themes with her use of the figure, space, and landscapes in Embracing Watercolors. For McChessney, these paintings are a personal journey where upon reflection the element of time hs had the opportunity to distort the perspective of the path traveled. "These are recurring themes that I hope become evident to the people who view my paintings." McChessney earned her B.F.A. at IPFW and in the fall she enters the M.F.A. program at the University of Bowling Green. Free parking available with JK O'Donnells providing beverages during the event. McChessney's work will be on display in the Main gallery until May 2011.

The highlight of the trip will be “The Baroque World of Fernando Botero.” This Latin American painter, sculptor and draftsman, was born in 1932. Also on exhibit is “Frank Stella: Irregular Polygons” consisting of 11 monumental compositions created in 1965-66. This series, based on simple geometries, marks a radical shift from Stella’s earlier striped paintings. It is one of the most complex artistic statements of the artist’s career. Travelers may also visit the Glass Pavilion which houses more than 5,000 works of art. The award-winning Pavilion opened in 2006 and is itself a work of art. All exterior and nearly all interior walls are made of large panels of curved glass.

Al Pounders' Visions at FWMoA

Visions of Umbria: Works by Al Pounders
April 16 - June 21, 2011
Fort Wayne Museum of Art
Inspired by decades of traveling to and painting in the rugged Umbrian terrain of Italy, "Visions of Umbria" is a culmination of Lafayette artist Al Pounders' portrayal of Italy; a community rich with history, excitement, myths, and miracles.
In his work, soft blues, yellows and pinks play against dark browns and greens to create a radiant surface and scenery filled with light and space.
Al Pounders, Professor Emeritus of painting at Purdue University, received his B.F.A. from the University of Buffalo and his M.F.A. from Cornell University. Over his almost five-decade-long career, Pounders has exhibited his work, quite literally, around the world. His work is in many public collections, including the High Museum, Georgia State University, and Purdue University.
