3 Artists Exhibit at Orchard Gallery in April

Raku Clay Vessels by Steve Vachon

The sculptural clay vessels are inspired by ancient artifacts and architecture. The artwork is created using slab construction and wheel methods and has been fired using raku along with other ceramic firing techniques.

Images of Steve’s ceramics have been in three books published by Lark Books: 500 Tiles, 500 Vases & 500 raku. His work has also been selected to be included in the upcoming book, 21st Century Ceramics.

Breakthrough Abstract Pantings by Becka Strachan

Becka, who is best known for her art clothing, "eye4dtale", will exhibit her original breakthrough paintngs. Becka says, "I like to start with acrylic paint and add unusual items such as cloth, newspaper, thread and modeling paste. My subject matter is usually abstract and many times loosely defined. Color is my favorite element for my work and I usually include lots of vibrant hues. Seeing how people react to my work is a thrill!

Pillows, Purses Jewelry by Suzi Emley

Suzi uses many fabrics found during her travels to Paris in her purses & pillows. Exciting new jewelry designs will also be unveiled. Get ready for Spring!

FROM SUZI: When I sit down to design a piece of jewelry I never know how it will
look until it is finished. I may have an idea of what I'd like to do, but that can change during the process. Inspiration comes from everywhere--sometimes just having many beads lying around on the table together will lend itself to creativity-- ideas I would not have thought of if the beads were not just scattered here and there.

The same concept applies to the design of my pillows and purses. The juxtaposition of fabrics inspires the creation and design of my pieces. I usually do not know what a purse or pillow will look like until it is completely finished.

My travels in the U.S. and Europe give me new ideas for creating jewelry and purses and I acquire most of my fabrics while traveling.

David MacLean Photos at Artlink through April 6

David MacLean Photos at Artlink

Artlink invites the public to view Photography by David MacLean presently showing in Artlink’s Push Pin Gallery through April 6, 2011.

Exhibiting 18 photos comprised of mainly straight reportage, MacLean also shows a strong sense of humor in a few of the composite pieces. The work will make you look again and bring a smile to your face. The strongest work can be seen in his “King of the Hill”; and the “Self Portrait” is a charmer.

David MacLean was a self-taught freelance photojournalist in the 1950's and '60s and a publisher and distributor of color postcards for 20 years before changing markets forced a change in profession. A second career as an antiquarian bookseller lasted 35 years. Retiring in 2002, he returned to photography with the intention of traveling the winter art circuit in the South and Southwest before medical problems forced the curtailment of those plans and limited travel to local art shows. Much of his current work consists of images taken in the past and, through advances in digital technology, are now being printed for the first time.

Gallery hours:
Tuesday - Thursday: noon to 5 p.m.
Friday – Saturday: noon to 9 p.m.
Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m.

GermanFest Call for Artists

"Prost" - GermanFest public art project seeks Fort Wayne area artists

Germanfest in Fort Wayne, IN announces an exciting new public art project : “Prost!”. We paraded with the Mastodons in the “Mastodons on Parade” project in 2005, when the colorful mastodons brought visitors and residents to downtown Fort Wayne. Now let’s celebrate 30th Anniversary Germanfest by bringing the people back downtown to see Germanfest’s “Prost!” German Stein Public Art Project.

During the Germanfest’s 30th Anniversary festival in 2011, four foot tall, bare fiberglass German steins have been created. Each stein will be sponsored by local business’, organizations, groups and individuals and decorated by local artists, and then displayed for duration of the festival.

Interested artists need to visit the "Prost!" website and download an artist information form, fill it out, and return the info sheet and artist rendering by hitting the email button on the "Prost!" website. Steins will be delivered in early April and will need to be completed by the middle of May.

Public invited to tour ceramist’s studio

Artlink invites the public to a Studio Visit with acclaimed Fort Wayne ceramist Joe Pelka on Friday, March 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Pelka’s studio located at 14529 Lima Road in Fort Wayne. Food and a cash bar will be provided by Club Soda. Ticket cost is $5 for Artlink members and $10 for the public. Tickets are available at Artlink Gallery, 437 E. Berry Street, Fort Wayne and must be purchased by Wednesday, March 9 to attend. Checks made out to “Artlink” will serve as your reservation.

Pelka’s work is wheel-thrown earthenware with hand-built features and brushed on, layered ceramic glazes. The artist’s very individual designs are exciting and bright and emphasize form, design and color. He studied at Orange Coast College in California and has been in the Fort Wayne area since 2003.

Sponsors for the Artlink Studio Visit series are the Flora Dale Krouse Foundation and the Edward D. and Ione Auer Foundation. The Pelka visit is the first of four studio visits planned this year. Studio visits help support area artists through exposure and art sales outside the normal gallery venue. With the series, artists get a chance to talk with interested visitors, and the public meets area artists in their workplace which helps to de-mystify the creative process.

“It’s a win-win situation for the artist and the public, and it furthers Artlink’s mission of exposing work by mid-career and emerging artists,” said Deb Washler, Artlink executive director. The series also enhances the educational mission of the not-for-profit contemporary art gallery.
