Richard Tuck at Orchard Gallery in May

Pottery & Paintings by Richard Tuck

Richard Tuck works in stoneware clay using wheel-thrown, slab-built and sculptural techniques. His ideas are drawn from the images of many cultures, primarily the American West. Tuck uses the techniques of resist, glaze over glaze, slip trailing and whatever other techniques are needed to capture the spirit of the designs and their relationship to each form.

Richard will also show his newest acrylic design studies.

Bio/Artist Statement:

Richard Tuck was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. Tuck attended the Fort Wayne Art Institute and studied ceramics with Clyde Burt and sculpture with Hector Garcia, graduating with a Certificate in Sculpture in 1970.

Tuck’s work is not a reflection of current trends or angst found today in most art publications. Rather it comes from a spiritual source from within that strives to give the viewer an experience of timeless beauty. Tuck feels a work must persist as an object of contemplation. He does not depict events, but tries to reawaken perception; to restore the magic, to create works that mediate between human being, nature, and the cosmos. He believes art should reach back to its great humane values; to its meditations on the human spirit, and integrate them with the global culture.

Tuck draws from his imagination and the history of ceramics, sculpture, and painting for the work he produces. He does not strive to be uninfluenced by the work of predecessors or contemporaries. Tuck’s work process is to constantly go back to a subject, alter the form and develop it further. A long time may elapse before ideas take form, and then they may occupy him for years.

Rural Studio Tour on May 1

Visit 5 area artists at their studios during a casual self-guided tour on Saturday, May 1 from 10am to 6pm.

Get information and locations online at http://www.facebook.com/ArtStudioTour

The idea for the tour started when artists Lisa Vetter & Kristy Jo Beber joked at an art fair last summer about having a "Trolley Tour" like event in our neck of the woods (Leo-Spencerville). With all the Amish out here, we envisioned having the Amish transport the attendees in their buggies, in place of the nice trollies & buses that Trolly Tour uses. The joke turned into a lunch meeting of brainstorming...and the Rural Studio Tour was born, sans the Amish drivers. Each studio will be open 10am-6pm on Saturday, May 1. It will be casual & self-guided...meaning people can visit as many studios & in any order as they wish & on their own time.

We have a fan page where anyone interested can get updates & a map (which will be up soon) http://www.facebook.com/ArtStudioTour. There will also be a link to an interactive map on Google, where they can plug in their own starting address and put the studios in any order they choose...getting detailed directions. Printed maps will be available at several local businesses, including The Orchard Gallery & United Supply in Fort Wayne, plus Leo & Spencerville sites.

There are 5 artists on the tour and travel time with a stop at each place will only put you in the car for 28 minutes total. With one stop in Northwest Fort Wayne, 3 in Leo and one in Spencerville. The artists are all looking forward to this "Art Adventure"...and assuming all goes well, we hope to make it an annual event, adding more artists in the future. Viewing an artist's work, visiting with them and seeing where they create the work....all at once...that's a unique experience that we are offering. We hope that the public comes out and shows their interest and support.

Cost: FREE. There will be art available for purchase.
