eye4dtale Clothing by Becka Strachan & Felted Purses and Backpacks by Janie Caldwell at the Orchard

Fun, funky and one of a kind handpainted items to wear and enjoy! Becka Strachan presents the newest pieces from her eye4dtale clothing line. Pieces are designed and sewn, then each piece features a special patch that is handpainted by Becka....making each a one of a kind piece of art to wear.

Featured alongside purses and bags by Janie Caldwell, this show is a must see fashion forward event!

Enjoy a fabulous selection of new purses by Janie....and just in time for back to school: she introduces her new backpacks!
4th R Creations began in November of 2007 in the studio of Janie Caldwell. A lover of fabric and color she began to see how felting (washing wool at extremely high temperatures) old sweaters found at thrift shops could be used for a variety of products. The idea of using something that would eventually be discarded appealed to her sense of "being green".

The totes and purses were Janie's first attempts and were well received at a church fund raiser auction. Then Janie's Mother-in-Law said "I cannot find a nice tea cozy". Ding! Ding! Ding! The funky tea cozy from felted material was born. Janie has always supported several non-profits in Michigan and Indiana and felt this might be a way to give back and do her art.

All 4th R products are Re-Created from recycled sweaters and discontinued designer fabrics that would have otherwise been discarded. A portion of all 4th R profits are donated to causes that benefit the environment and humankind.

2009 PRESIDENTIAL GALA - Chris Kahler presents: Interconnectivity

Opening Reception: August 29, 2009; 6-9pm

The University of Saint Francis, President Sister M. Elise Kriss and the School of Creative Arts present Interconnectivity, an exhibition by Chris Kahler, from August 29 through October 11, 2009, with an opening Presidential Gala on Saturday, August 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the John P. Weatherhead Gallery of the Rolland Art Center. This exhibition is sponsored in part by Barnes and Thornburg, LLC.

Represented by the St. Louis-based Bruno David Gallery, Kahler’s artistic technique incorporates a variety of media including acrylic and oil-based paints on panel, canvas and paper. His large-scale paintings are abstract, expressive and extremely colorful. Interconnectivity is a concept that is used in numerous fields such as cybernetics, biology, ecology, network theory, and non-linear dynamics. The concept can be summarized as that all parts of a system interact with and rely on one another simply by the fact that they occupy the same system, and that a system is difficult or sometimes impossible to analyze through its individual parts considered alone. The concept is closely linked to the Observer Effect and the Butterfly Effect.

Chris Kahler received his BFA from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1991. During his junior year of college, he spent a semester abroad at Parson’s School of Art And Design and the American University in Paris, France. He then went on for an MA at Eastern Illinois University and an MFA from Northwestern University in 1995. He is currently an Associate Professor at Eastern Illinois University.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The exhibition will be on view from August 29th 2009 until October 11th 2009.

Call for entry for Mini Mixed-Media AIDS Quilt Exhibit at Artlink

ENTRIES DUE: September 29, 2009
EXHIBIT DATES: October 2 – December 2, 2009
Contact: Deb Washler, 260.424.7195 or email: deb@artlinkfw.com

To commemorate the AIDS Task Force 25th Anniversary, Artlink is asking area artists to create a mini AIDS Quilt for an exhibit in its Push Pin Gallery (formerly the Hallway Gallery). The artist may use any two-dimensional media. The work should be no larger than 12” x 12”. The theme of the artwork should pertain to AIDS through artistic commentary or commemoration.

There will be no jury, no fees. Quilts may be unframed as artwork in the Pushpin Gallery can be hung with Velcro. Work must be hand delivered to Artlink no later than September 29 during regular gallery hours. Artists are asked to inform Artlink as soon as possible that they will be participating in this exhibit. If artwork is sold, Artlink will split the 35% commission with the AIDS Task Force. If artists wish to donate a portion of their proceeds to the Task Force, they may do so, but this is not required.

The exhibit will open with a reception at Artlink on Friday, October 2. The cast and crew of Quilt – A Musical Celebration, an Off-Main production of the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, will be in attendance that evening.

To participate in this exhibit contact Artlink at info@artlinkfw.com or call 260-424-7195.

Call for Artists: Donate your time and art for a good cause

Mental Health America of Allen County (formerly Mental Health Association) is looking for artists for an event to occur on October 10, 2009 at the former Jorgenson store building on Covington Road. (The event date is tentative.) MHA is trying to get between 35 and 40 artists together on that day to begin painting at the site in the morning, inviting the public to watch the works in progress, followed by a cocktail hour with finger foods, and then an auction of the finished works. All proceeds will go to the MHA. They are hoping to provide canvas, paper and paint and some limited number of tables or easels (as well as providing lunch to the artists) and giving you (the artist) some publicity before and at the event.

If you are interested in being a part of this event, contact Roger Hultquist at attylaw37@yahoo.com.
