Sisters...Featuring Mixed Media Acrylics by Sue Davis & One of a Kind Dolls by Rebecca Dearing

At the Orchard Gallery from May 2-30, new mixed media pieces and acrylic paintings on canvas by Sue Davis. Built up layers of various materials, along with collage, create the rich textural surface for which her paintings are known. Sue will also show new mixed media pieces, made of clay and embellished with natural objects, such as a shell or beach stones. A calming color palette makes her work quite collectable and easy to incorporate into most any home.

Sue's sister, Rebecca Dearing from the Dayton Ohio area, will be showing her dolls alongside Sue's paintings. The two women have been looking forward to their appropriately named show, "Sisters..."

A statement from Sue about her work: My work is inspired by the environment around me, nature's spirit and the joy of exploration and discovery. I am fascinated by the rhythm, texture and vitality of natural forms. I take liberties with these forms and create new, yet related, images. I have always been drawn to small pieces of nature. I cannot resist picking up the smooth, dark stone, the piece of weathered bark, or the amazingly delicate little shell. I often find that I have one or more of these treasures in my pocket! I hope that my work projects a calm, contemplative atmosphere. One that encourages the viewer to slow down, take a deep calming breath.
I think about connectedness and reflect on a time when humanity held greater respect for the natural rhythms and cycles of the earth and moon.... a time when everyday life was very much influenced by these natural cycles and seasons.

When: May 2-30, 2009

Parkview Field adds local artist twist
From the City of Fort Wayne newsfeed; emphasis mine.

Friday, 10 April 2009
Mayor Thanks Artists for Gifts Depicting Local Landmarks

Saying that the new Parkview Field is truly the community’s ballpark, Deputy Mayor Greg Purcell on behalf of Mayor Tom Henry helped cut the ribbon on a permanent collection of local artists’ work which will hang in the suite level lounge area at Parkview Field. Pieces depicting scenes from the Fort Wayne area will be on display.

“We know that Parkview Field is going to be the site of many exciting events, both sports-related and otherwise, “ said Mayor Tom Henry. “The inclusion of local artists’ work, especially work showing familiar scenes of our community, is just one more special touch in this beautiful facility.”

Charley Shirmeyer, owner of Northside Galleries, along with local artist Terry Ratliff (Ratart) and the TinCaps are collaborating to turn the suite level lounge public spaces into a gallery-like setting. Pieces slated for the initial display include depictions of downtown Fort Wayne’s Embassy Theater, the Allen County Courthouse and other local landmarks.

“We are thrilled to be a part of the excitement at Parkview Field,” Shirmeyer said. “We hope this artwork draws attention not only to the beauty of Fort Wayne, but also to the talented artists who call this area home.”

The ballpark’s suite level will host baseball fans for TinCaps games, as well as guests of special events such as receptions, parties and meetings.

“It is such a treat to have this art in our ballpark,” TinCaps team president Mike Nutter said. “We tried to give Parkview Field a unique, “Fort Wayne” feel and this artwork takes that to the next level.”

Several corporate and individual sponsors are working with Northside Galleries to defray the costs associated with the artwork. Those sponsors will receive acknowledgement in the form of a plaque which will be displayed next to each piece. A few pieces remain available for sponsorship.

For more information on the artwork or sponsorship opportunities, contact Charley Shirmeyer of Northside Galleries at (260) 483-6624 or via e-mail at charley@northsidegalleries.com .

Groenert/Harris Painting Party - Toscani Painting Unveiled

Toscani Painting Unveiled

Local artist Diane Allen Groenert will unveil her oil painting of “Toscani Pizzeria” on Monday, April 27 at Toscani’s, 120 W. Wayne Street, downtown Fort Wayne. The reception will take place from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with the public unveiling of the painting at 6:00 p.m. The restaurant will be open to the public all evening with food and drink available for purchase.

“Toscani” is the newest and 12th painting in Groenert’s “Downtown Fort Wayne Series.” “I attempted to put a bit of the personality of the owner into the painting by playing with the color and perspective,” says Groenert of owner Mike Harris.

An avid supporter of downtown revitalization, Groenert has rented studio space in downtown Fort Wayne since September, 2001. Harris opened Toscani’s in January of 2006 directly across the street from Groenert’s painting studio Art Up. “It’s so very convenient,” says Groenert. “I love the outdoor seating. When I’m painting in my studio window, friends will wave me over for a chat and a glass of wine.”

Groenert began painting downtown sights in 2001 as a “teeny little contribution to our downtown revitalization.” She began with an oil painting of the Allen County Courthouse. Since then, she has completed paintings of Stoner’s, Cindy’s, Columbia Street West, Artlink, Tower Bank, Henry’s, the McCulloch-Weatherhogg House (United Way building), J. K. O’Donnell’s and the historic Embassy Theatre. Prints of these paintings will be available for purchase during the reception.

Toscani’s is a cozy Italian restaurant serving homemade pizza and classic pasta dishes. Owner Mike Harris is frequently found in the dining room greeting regulars and making friends with first-time diners.
