Call for Artists for Charity Event

Local breast cancer survivors and Fort Wayne’s roller derby team, the Fort Wayne Derby Girls, are teaming up in an effort to raise money for young women with breast cancer in our community. Near the end of summer, we will be hosting an art exhibit and silent auction in conjunction with local artists and businesses. The most recent event of this type was successful in raising over $4,000, and our intention is to exceed this amount with your assistance.

A group of local artists and women will be volunteering their talents and their bodies to create unique, inspiring cast representations of the female breast and the emotions associated with breast cancer. Each cast will be painted by a local artist, mounted on a powder-coated metal stand, and auctioned off for charity.

As we begin to organize the event, we wanted to extend an invitation to interested local artists willing to lend their artistic talents to this cause. Our goal is to have the casts ready for the artists by June 1, which will allow ample time for completion. We are in the process of selecting a venue that can offer us the opportunity to display the casts for approximately one month before the auction and host a gala that will include hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and live music. It will be an event to remember.

I am the Executive Editor of Business People magazine and the Director of Media & Public Relations for the Fort Wayne Derby Girls. I am very proud of our accomplishments and the $26,000 we have donated to local women and children’s charities since the league was established in October 2005. We embody the strength, courage, and vitality of Fort Wayne women while providing another form of athletic entertainment to the Summit City.

Please join us in supporting our city’s breast cancer survivors. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Animation artist Tom Gasek to visit Huntington University

Animation artist Tom Gasek will visit Huntington University on Saturday, April 12. He will host “An Animation Artist Presentation” open to the campus community and the public at 1 p.m. in room 150 of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. There is no admission charge. His presentation will include a screening and a discussion of his work in the digital media arts industry.

Tom Gasek began his career by winning a Student Academy Award. This led to work with Will Vinton, Disney’s “Return to Oz,” “The Penny Cartoon” from Pee Wee’s Playhouse on CBS, Art Clokey’s “Gumby” and with Aardman Animations in Bristol, England. Gasek contributed animation to the train chase sequence in Nick Park’s Oscar-winning “The Wrong Trousers” and was a key guest animator on Aardman Features’ first full-length feature film, “Chicken Run.” Gasek continues to freelance with Aardman on projects like the Creature Comforts series. He just finished working with Little Airplane in New York as a guest director on their Nickelodeon hit, “The Wonder Pets.” He has several national Addy and Broadcast Design Awards for clients like Levi Strauss, Burger King and Nickelodeon.

Gasek has been teaching at the Rochester Institute of Technology as a visiting assistant professor. He is completing his independent, self-produced animated short film, “Off-Line” and will enter it in festivals around the world. Gasek lives with his wife and son and works from his home-studio in Great Barrington, Mass.

For more information about Gasek’s presentations, contact Bob Sloan, digital media arts assistant, at rsloan@huntington.edu or (260) 359-4325.

Grand Opening Reception "Oil Paintings by Karen Moriarty"

WHEN: Reception: April 18, 5-9 pm
Show runs April 18-June 6
Regular Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 1-6 pm

WHERE: Karen Moriarty Studio & Gallery
123 West Columbia Street "on the Landing"
Fort Wayne IN

Contact info: 260.443.2121 or www.karenmoriarty.com

About the Artist: Karen Moriarty's paintings reveal influences as varied as Bonnard and Deibenkorn. She paints from the landscape—the earth, the human body, a plate of oranges. Her oil paintings contrast delicate washes with heavy impasto strokes.

Moriarty majored in painting at the Fort Wayne Art Institute and then lived in San Francisco for several years. After returning to Indiana, she studied at Indiana University. She has shown at the Fort Wayne Musuem of Art and Minnetrista Cultural Center, Ball State University. She maintains a studio in the West Central area of Fort Wayne and her work shows in galleries, group and solo shows throughout the Midwest.

“The color, the movement and light of the natural world—that is what I want people to see in my work, the earthly beauty that surrounds us. And, too, the paint. I love the pure beauty of paint, smearing, splashing, dripping. I like to leave evidence of the behavior of the paint itself. I will scrub it on with a brus h or knife, scratch it back off. I want to see remnants of the process. Recently, I have been pouring paint onto the canvas. Paint is the most sensuous medium for me.”

“Moriarty stands out as an inner directed, Zen-like chronicler of the outdoors…”
-David Tanner, Whatzup Events

Karen's work also shows at
Maple Street Gallery, Evanston IL
Artist's Den, Valporaiso IN
