Identity Crisis: American Self Portraits from Benjamin West to Cindy Sherman

Since Alexis de Tocqueville's seminal text in the 1830s criticizing the young United States, Americans have often been driven to validate themselves and their way of life. No where is this more obvious than in our visual arts, particularly the occurrence that the self-portrait in America is often as much about one?s context in society as one's self.

Bring your lunch or order a box lunch and have it waiting on you! The Museum will provide coffee, tea and light dessert; No reservations are required unless pre-ordering a box lunch.

Local University Faculties Shine at Artlink

A biennial exhibit featuring the work of art faculty members from Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and the University of St. Francis (USF) will open on Friday, February 29 with a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Main Gallery. Included in the dynamic range of art disciplines this year will be work from Mary Klopfer of USF, who will display her graphite and metal sculptures “Large Pod” and “Lighting Fly.” Nationally known printmaker, Jauneth Skinner, the new Interim Chair, Dept. of Visual Communication and Design at IPFW, will display a pair of digital prints. And emeritus IPFW instructors Norm Bradley and Don Kruse will exhibit newly created paintings and drawings. Other works of interest are large paintings by Mee Kyung Shim from IPFW and two sparkling little paintings and a drawing by Justin H. Miller of USF. The public is invited to the opening reception which will be crowded with an exciting mix of instructors and their students. The exhibit will be up through April 2.

On display in Artlink’s Hallway Gallery will be a group of figure drawings done by the artists who frequent Artlink’s twice-weekly figure drawing sessions. The sessions are held in the basement of the Hall Community Arts Center, home of Artlink, Cinema Center, Dance Collective and Arch. Twice a week, artists can draw from a live model using their own materials in a casual studio setting. The drawings on display will showcase the varied skill levels of the participants and hopefully encourage the public to drop in and draw with the group. This exhibit is available for viewing before and after Cinema Center performances and during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Artlink Gallery admission is free to members; a $2 donation is suggested for non-members.

The faculty exhibition is sponsored by the Helen P. Van Arnam Foundation as well as Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, Regional Partnership Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, and many generous members of Artlink.
YOU: Featured in black and white?
Journalist, Kayleen Reusser, is looking for a variety of artists in the Ft. Wayne area to feature in local newspapers.

If you would like to tell Fort Wayne about what you do . . . here’s your chance to go for it! - Emily Boller

From Kayleen Reusser:
I could use your help in writing about artists for the News-Sentinel newspaper Neighbors section and /or Religion section. I also write for the Ossian Sun Riser.

The Ossian paper has to feature people who live in the south part of the city with Waynedale the northern limit, then down to Ossian. The News-Sentinel newspaper can be just about any location in Allen County.

Could you send an email to people in your group, asking them to send me an email about themselves and their work, including a photo or two of their creations, if they’d be interested in me covering their work?

I can't guarantee I can use each one, but it would be helpful to have a number of people contact me for possible ideas. They should include their phone numbers also.

Sue Davis-Vachon and Steve Vachon (a huband/wife team) of Fort Wayne had 2 tiles included. The Leaf Tile Assemblages combine raku fired clay tiles with natural elements such as pressed leaves, sticks, shells, and small stones. Each is one of a kind.

Kim Rorick of Ossian also had 2 tiles published. One is hand painted (house tile) and the other (teapot tile) is a relief tile that is quite a bit larger.

The Vachons and Kim Rorick are members of The Orchard Gallery, 6312 Covington Road. A selection of their work can be see at The Orchard Gallery during regular business hours. Meet the artists at a reception on March 1, 12-5. To see images of the 4 published tiles, visit www.theorchardgallery.com.

Sue, Steve and Kim had to submit their images for the book over a year ago. There were over 1500 entries from many different countries.
