Benedict, LeMar headline ‘Attributes of Earth’ exhibit
Huntington University’s Robert E. Wilson Gallery will showcase artists Grace Benedict and Linda LeMar in the exhibit “Attributes of the Earth: Drawings and Ceramic Sculpture” from February 4-28, 2008.
This exhibit will feature drawings by Benedict and ceramic work by LeMar, both of whom are from Lafayette, Ind.
An artists’ reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9.
Grace Benedict began working with color pencils from a very early age when she filled in the squares of graph paper to create different color patterns. Her drawings have evolved to a level of heightened detail and color use. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, in 1977, and her graduate studies in drawing and painting at Tulane University in 1979.
She continues to explore the spontaneity of drawing from life, abstracting and inventing form, as well as pursuing a fully descriptive visual statement. Her focus on nature lends itself to a variety of media, including chalk pastel, charcoal, graphite, watercolor and ink. She has lived in Lafayette for seven years and has taught drawing and design at Purdue University in the Visual and Performing Arts Department since her arrival.
Linda LeMar has been a professional artist for more than 20 years. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1979, and Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 1984. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants, fellowships and artist-in-residencies.
LeMar is a founding member of Artists’ Own, an artists’ cooperative on 518 Main St. in Lafayette where she has sold sculpture and pottery since 1999.
The Robert E. Wilson Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., before and after all Merillat Centre for the Arts performances, and by appointment. For further information, call interim gallery director Barb Michel at (260) 359-4172.

Memories of World War II: Photographs from the Archives of the Associated Press
January 12 – March 9, 2008
Sponsored by National City Bank and the Dr. Louis A. and Anne B. Schneider Foundation
Media Sponsors: Indiana's NewsCenter and Northeast Indiana Public Radio
Memories of WWII features more than 120 of The Associated Press’ most significant and influential photographs relating to WWII. Many of the photographs you will recognize—some are haunting, such as Byron Rollins’ Allied POWs in Liberated Camp; some are joyous, such as Victor Jorgensen’s Sailor and Nurse Kiss Times Square; and some captured history as it changed, such as Peter Carroll’s U.S. Troops March on Champs Elysees.
Almost 200 reporters and photographers fanned out around the globe to cover World War II for the AP. Five lost their lives, seven others won Pulitzer Prizes, including Joe Rosenthal who clamored up Iwo Jima’s Mount Suribachi to take the flag-raising photograph that became the emblem of American victory.
The FWMoA is extending free admission to Memories of World War II: Photographs from the Archives of the Associated Press to military personnel and their families who have served or are currently serving our country.

Poppin’ Pills exhibits humor and pathos
Poppin’ Pills opens in Artlink’s Main Gallery with a reception on Friday, January 18, from 7 to 9:00 p.m. A nation-wide call for entry for this pharmaceutically-themed exhibit elicited work from 24 artists in 15 states as well as local artists.
“The only direction the artists had in interpreting the theme of Poppin’ Pills was the prospectus statement: ‘Humor is acceptable, as well as serious commentary.’ So, this exhibit may surprise you or it may be exactly what you expect,” said Deb Washler, Artlink’s Executive Director.
A touch of humor is shown in a work by Judith Brandon of Cleveland, Ohio, called Smoking Monkey. It is an ink, charcoal, pastel and graphite drawing of a monkey wreathed in smoke, holding a hookah. There is a touch of poignancy in two mixed media pieces by Connie Bethards of Greeley, Colorado, which are entitled “Mandala for Mom” and Mandala for Dad.” The two small squares are made up of the prescription drugs taken by each parent as their health failed. The varied and colorful backgrounds of the pill-covered mandalas are made of ground up medications.
Work in the exhibit by Fort Wayne artists include paintings by Norm Bradley, photos by William Baulkey, acrylic and ink pieces by Shaun Malinowski, a linoleum cut by Julie Wall, and a photo by Paul Yurkovich. Artist Jodie Hardy of Indianapolis is exhibiting three pieces: a quilt entitled “Small Comfort,” a textile called “Take as Directed,” and a sculpture called “Govitran Survival Kit.” And Rob Millard-Mendez from Evansville is showing a wood and painted pill on legs sculpture entitled, “The Little Bulloo Pill.”
Mixed media art work by an exciting young artist, Eric Stine, Indianapolis, will be on display in Artlink’s Hallway Gallery. The Hallway show may be viewed during regular gallery hours and before and after Cinema Center performances. Both exhibitions will be up through February 20.
