about the exhibition...

Requiem: By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam & Indochina

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art presents moving and powerful images of the Vietnam War in a memorial titled Requiem: By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina. This exhibition features more than 150 photographs taken by photojournalists who were killed or reported missing while covering the conflict. The exhibition encompasses photographs taken by the men and women on both sides who gave their lives while on the job, during the conflict which began with the French Indochina War of the 1950s, and culminated with the fall of Phnom Penh and Saigon in 1975.
Photojournalists in Vietnam and Indochina sent out to the world unforgettable images of what they encountered. Hundreds of those photographers never came home. Requiem pays tribute to over 50 of those who did not survive. The power of the exhibition lies not only in the extraordinary photographs, but also in the viewer’s knowledge that the man or woman behind the lens would die—in some cases within minutes after capturing that image.
Requiem brings together photographers from both sides of the war — not only Americans, Europeans, Cambodians, and South Vietnamese, but also North Vietnamese and Vietcong, many whose images have never before been in the West. Curators Horst Faas and Tim Page searched through many archives, as well as accessing private collections of the families of the deceased photographers, to create this moving exhibition.

about the lecturer...

FMF Corpsman Paul “Buzz” Baviello will give a FREE lecture at the Requiem opening reception beginning at 6PM. Seating is limited to 150 on a first-come basis. Please contact Brian Wagner at 422-6467, ext 338 or wagner@fwmoa.org today to make your reservation.
FMF Corpsman Paul “Buzz” Baviello is a Vietnam Veteran who served as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman with a Marine Infantry unit at An Hoa during 1969-70. His numerous awards include the Bronze Star medal with V, Navy Commendation Medal with V, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnamese Civil Action Medal with Palm, and the Navy Unit Commendation.

Upon completing his service, Baviello returned to college to finish his teaching degree. In 1974 he was hired as a History teacher in Montebello, Ca where he continues teaching today. He has served for multiple terms as the Social Studies Department Chair and several years ago created a class entitled "Lessons of the Vietnam War." In 2002, Baviello was selected by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund as one of two teachers from each state to be part of the inaugural class for the now annual Teachers Teach Vietnam Seminar.

Baviello is also the author of the 1994 novel “Corpsman Up” which pulls from his experience as a medical specialist in a combat platoon; assigned the task of saving lives in the midst of war. It is the only book written solely about Navy Corpsmen serving with Marines in combat and as a result of it he has spoken at numerous Corpsmen and Marine functions.

The exhibition was organized at George Eastman House by Marianne Fulton, senior scholar. Major support for the George Eastman House exhibition is provided by ESL.

CONTACT: Deb Washler, Executive Director, deb@artlinkfw.com

The photographs of nationally-known artist Pamela de Marris are on display
at Artlink now through May 16. The majority of the 24 pieces in the exhibit
are very large format color photos which depict her husband, James Meadows.
This is a very personal pictorial diary documenting almost 30 years of his
life with the artist. While computer-generated images are commonplace
today, de Marris's photos have been printed from unaltered negatives. The
only manipulation has been the splicing together of original negatives. The
richness of a real negative print is evident in the quality of the artist's
prints.

De Marris attended Ball State University and was an MFA candidate in
Photography, Video, Film and Digital Art at the Rhode Island School of
Design in Providence, Rhode Island. She received her MFA in Photography
from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her selected resume lists
46 solo exhibitions in galleries throughout the world. De Marris's work is
represented by Ken Damy Galleries in Brescia, Italy, Galerie Viviane Esders
in Paris, France, Dennis/Schlesinger/Stetz Galleries in New York City,
Schneider Gallery in Chicago and 4 Star Gallery in Indianapolis.

See each in green (like the green, green grass of spring) below.

IMPORTANT ARTS ADVOCACY WORKSHOP
To: Artists, arts organizations and those interested in the arts
From: Jan Shupert-Arick, Director of Regional Services at Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne
Re: Arts Advocacy Opportunity for Region 3

It is my pleasure to announce that Region 3 will have a unique opportunity to attend and participate in an Arts Advocacy Work Shop on June 5th. Across the State of Indiana, we have been working hard to increase funding for the arts and to learn how to leverage dollars for the arts that are so important to our communities. We have much to learn and much to gain by coming together for a training session and discussion on arts advocacy. I urge you to attend on June 5th.

To register, simply complete the registration form and send it in with the $15 fee.

There’s more! At 1 p.m. on June 5th, just prior to the work shop, the School of Creative Arts has invited everyone attending the work shop to an open house. So, come tour the arts galleries, explore the studios and classrooms, and enjoy light summertime refreshments!

Arts Advocacy Workshops to be held in Northern Indiana
Indiana Coalition for the Arts will present Arts Advocacy 101: A Practical Workshop at three locations in northern Indiana this spring. Each three-hour workshop will focus on the essentials of advocacy and lobbying for the arts, and will equip the attendees with the information they will need to begin an effective advocacy campaign with local or state government.

The presenter will be Sally Gaskill, State Captain for Arts Action with Americans for the Arts (Kelly School of Business, I.U. Bloomington) and an experienced advocate and lobbyist. Registration is $15. Contact Jan Shupert-Arick for registration form.

Call if you have questions or comments.

Urge Members of Congress to Co-Sponsor the Artist Deduction Bill

The U.S. tax system accords unequal treatment to creators and collectors who donate tangible works (e.g., paintings or manuscripts...or pottery) to museums, libraries, educational or other collecting institutions. A collector may take a tax deduction for the fair-market value of the work, but creators may deduct only their "basis"
value-essentially the cost of materials such as paint and canvas.
