¡Conversación Caliente! A Conversation with Joe Diaz

Join us as Executive Director Charles Shepard and collector Joe Diaz discuss the evolution and highlights of ¡Arte Caliente! The Joe A. Diaz Collection.

Joe A. Diaz, a South Texas based businessman has been collecting art for almost 25 years. Diaz’s collection showcases the diversity of contemporary Chicano art in both subject matter and media.

For his collection, Diaz said in an interview, he does not select work for investment purposes or because of an artist’s name. Instead, he has found work that grabs him—that says something. From the gentle portraits of Gloria Osuna Perez to the political statements of Alfred J. Quiroz, Diaz believes that all of the works in his collection are “powerful, thoughtful, and really hot!”

The reception will feature scrumptious specialties from Las Lomas and George’s La Baguette Bakery. Please RSVP by calling Brian at 422.6467, ext. 338 or email wagner@fwmoa.org prior to November 15.

[SORRY TO POST THIS AFTER THE DEADLINE! But how cool that FWMOA also put out the exhibition announcement en espanol! Read on.]

Seven Young Contemporaries at Artlink

The public is invited to attend Seven Young Contemporaries, an art exhibition featuring area artists. The exhibit opens on Friday, November 10, at Artlink, 437 E. Berry Street, Fort Wayne. The opening reception will be from 7 to 9:00 p.m. and the artists will be present.

The seven young talents in the exhibit are Nathan Abels, Jessica Baisden, David Carpenter, Alan Kitchen, Kat Rohrbacher, Nate Utesch and Dan Swartz. The artists are all painters with the exception of Jessica Baisden who is a photographer.

The exhibit was curated by Dan Swartz, a former student at the University of Saint Francis, before moving on to New York City. Swartz selected this group of seven 20-somethings for their diverse range of painting styles and subject matter. The show came to Artlink through a fateful cancellation by another gallery in town. Ready to be hung, Artlink’s Artist Panel couldn’t turn the young artists down.

“The gallery time was slotted for a short, two-week show for local artists anyway,” said Deb Washler, Artlink’s Executive Director, “…so, this is all lucky happenstance for the artists and for Artlink.” The exhibit will be up through Sunday, November 26. Also in the main gallery are holiday gift tables filled with artfully made and reasonably priced jewelry, pottery, wood-turned and glass objects d’art ideal for personal, home and office use.

Artlink’s Hallway Gallery, an adjunct gallery located between Cinema Center and Artlink, will feature the watercolors of Lois Pieper through January 10, 2007.

Dick Lehman Benefit Exhibition & Sale

Over the last 3 months an unusual event has come together in the pottery community.
It is the "Extended Hands: A Show of Support" benefit.

Master potter Dick Lehman is experiencing a recurrence of a lymphoma condition, and the chemotherapy and stem cell therapy treatments have and will continue to severely limit his ability to produce any pottery, and therefore threatens the existence of his studio and livelihood.

In an effort to lighten his load and create some cash flow, a small group of potters & friends cooked up the idea of a benefit exhibition that would exist simultaneously in his Goshen (IN) gallery, as well as online to attract both his local clientele and customers from farther afield. Anyone anywhere could purchase artwork generously donated by some of the best and emerging talent in the field . Thus, Extended Hands: A Show of Support was born, and beginning now will be ready for pre-viewing.

Beginning the morning of Wednesday, November 1, all things will be ready for active buying to generate income for Dick in this difficult time.
http://www.claylink.com/lehman2006.html

More than 100 potters from across the United States and several foreign countries have donated over 300 pieces of quality pottery and sculpture, and some unusual miscellaneous items. The show resides at Dick Lehman's Studio in Goshen, IN (www.DickLehman.com - for location & directions), as well as at the URL mentioned above. A tantalizing variety of forms, techniques, and styles across a wide price range are now available for your viewing.

All work is available for sale. A few of the pieces are of such esteem that they will be for sale through an auction format commencing November 1. Customers will transact their purchases by calling Dick's studio and placing an order by phone. Credit card and shipping information will be exchanged then.
This will be a terrific opportunity to do something very generous while you add to your collection, buy a gift, or just feel good pitching in. Please click the link at the bottom of this message to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in helping out as well.
