Artlink’s Animal Images Exhibit Opens

The public is invited to attend Artlink’s Animal Images exhibition which opens with a reception from 7 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, at Artlink, 437 E. Berry Street, Fort Wayne.

Forty-four artists from 10 states will have artwork hanging in the national exhibition featuring images of animals. Three-dimensional pieces include a pair of 42” high, welded steel birds and a 5” high tiger, “Boris,” by local artist Sayaka Ganz. There is also a 3’ x 3’ sculpture of a red-eyed tree frog suspended with fishing line by Cheryl Gierscher of Huntertown. Gierscher says the piece is made of recycled cola cans and her children’s old homework. Most of the 69 pieces of artwork in the exhibit are wall work. The all-media show includes photos, prints, drawings, paintings, jewelry and mixed media and will be up through September 27.

There are 24 Fort Wayne artists in the show, including Norm Bradley, Art Cislo, Ales and Renata Pancner, Audrey Riley, Kat Rohrbacher, Eric Stine and Sherry Yoder. Regional artists exhibiting include David Johnson from Muncie, Charlie Spear of Peru, Pamela Turnbow of Columbia City, Herb Vonderau of Lima, Ohio, and others.

The public is also invited to attend Artlink’s pet adoption day which takes place in the art gallery on Saturday, September 9. The SPCA will bring live animals into the gallery from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and Pet Jamboree will be doing the same from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. These worthy organizations have many dogs, puppies and kittens in need of a good home. Artlink will also offer free animal art activities for children in the gallery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artlink’s Executive Director Deb Washler says, “What a great opportunity for folks – they can come see a great art show, ‘Animal Images’ and have a chance to adopt a pet. It doesn’t get much better than that!”

The Hallway Gallery will feature Photographs by Mary Partee and Ron Patton.

You won't want to miss this one! The Possum Trot Orchestra will play 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Friday, August 18 at the Dash-In, 814 Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne.

Here's the special part! It's the opening reception for an art exhibit by the band's own Susie Suraci. That's right! Susie is not only a very talented singer/songwriter but also an accomplished visual artist whose works have been exhibited in galleries throughout the Midwest. (Susie exhibits as Susan Taylor Suraci.) The Dash-In exhibition features Susie's vintage lake trailer paintings, many of which were sponsored by a 2004-05 Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artist Project grant.

Hey, it's not often you get a "two-fer" — great music and great paintings! Come enjoy yet another dimension of your favorite Possums! Join us at the Dash Friday night, 7-9, August 18. And tell your friends! As always, the Possums thank you for your support. See you there!

MORE ON THE ARTIST AND THE EXHIBIT.
Having witnessed the impact that changes in culture and environment
have had on the American landscape, Suraci feels compelled to record
contemporary vistas before they are obliterated. Her paintings are
landscapes that usually show the stamp of man somehow, whether it's by
the inclusion of a road, a building, a car. Or perhaps a trailer.

The artist's most recent inspiration/obsession is the colorful lake
trailer culture in the counties of Northeast Indiana. Through her lake
country travel, Suraci realized that these offbeat retreats will likely
vanish completely in the future. The fact is, as lake property
continues to increase in demand and investment value, many of the old
lake trailers are being hauled away in favor of more prestigious
dwellings. Suraci's goal is to record the carefree charm of some of
these vintage trailers during their last seasons as a familiar part of
the Indiana landscape.

Many of the paintings in this exhibition were sponsored by a 2004-05
Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artist Project grant. Suraci
earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in painting at the University of
Maryland. She is also a singer/songwriter and member of the Possum Trot
Orchestra.

(PLEASE NOTE: Susie's paintings are on exhibit at the Dash-In August 7 through September 10. Dash-In business hours are:
Mon.-Thurs., 7 a.m.-4 p.m.; Fri., 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sat., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.)
